completely new to emulation...about resolution...
Hi, i downloaded v1.51 yesterday and was playing games all night...just incredible to think that 10 years i went through so much trouble with game genie, game doctor, and all those games i couldn't afford because they over $100 each....
Thing is, i'm wondering whether it's me, or is the resolution of some games still somewhat lacking...I mean i'm unsure because it's been a long time since i played SNES, and maybe that's really what the quality was like 10 years ago....If however, the resolution is not as high as that from the actual console, is it because of the emulator, the rom, or simply the monitor?....I mean i was actually quite surprised by how small the sizes of these roms are....only a few mb......does the quality improve with the sizes of the roms?
If it's not to do with the roms, then exactly how can the resolution be improved?....i have read some of the threads answering the question already....but the technical details were a bit beyond me.....thing is i don't really know what actually affects the resolution.....also the video settings only has a few options and i don't really know what "graysacle mode" or "vsync" is.....Could somebody explain this to me?....thx
Dave

The original SNES resolution is far lower than your current desktop resolution.
The docs describe more or less what you need to know.
The best solution for "removing the low res feeling" is using one of the filters.

There should be documentation - try http://sourceforge.net/projects/zsnes/
The SNES resolution can be 256 or 512 pixels per line and 224, 239, 448 or 478 lines per screen. The most common one is 256x224. (Note that back in the day this was stretched to the 4:3 TV format.)
Quality doesn't have much to do with screen size or ROM size though.
Try some filters, e.g. interpolation and HQ?x. Audio settings should stay as they are.

Curious question: Did the 'filtering' of the TV make games appear that they had a higher res?
I used composite output on my SNES I would have never guessed it would be outputting 256x224. With the DKC series the games looked that much smoother although with games that have simple coloring it looked pretty poor.
When I saw the really small image the first time I used an emulator I thought something wasn't quite right
.
Also, thats a board filter that kicks in whenever you misspell zsnes or something.

Not really... but they made the low res a bit less obvious.smkdan wrote:Curious question: Did the 'filtering' of the TV make games appear that they had a higher res?

well, instead of being pixelated it was fuzzy, if you want to have it not appear low res like most people say use a filter, and if you don't want to do that, you can always run it in window mode where the pixilation is to small for you to notice. That's if you don't mind tiny windows.
