It's not that it's a bad idea to try any diagnostic while it's in the case, it's that it will most likely get you nowhere.alexz721 wrote:So the consensus here is that it's probably a bad idea to attempt any sort of software diagnostics as long as the external casing's still on the drive?
In answer to the question as to if it's making weird noises, it's a kind of whizzing sound separated by small gaps of silence.
Oh, and a random and possibly stupid question. I've got another one of these drives and I've been wondering for the longest time if it's better to stand it on its side or lie it flat.
And the case of that hard drive is just held together with plastic clips. If I recall, one side of the top (when it's lying down) pries off, then the rest is either easily removed plastic clips or torx screws. I'm sure about the top, but I'm a little fuzzy about the rest. It was about a year ago when I had to repair one of these.
The whirring sound could be to do with the drive spinning up and down due intermittent power failure. It could also be the drive dying. At this point it's hard to say for certain.
As far as leaving it standing or lying down, it shouldn't make a difference as long as you don't turn it while it's running. Those drives are pretty well ventilated.
