I just use grep and sed and pipe the result back into the file.

Some days I stick a USB cable into my ear and just think files onto the hard drive.Jikmo wrote:Psh, you people and your text editorsGil_Hamilton wrote:EDITadventure_of_link wrote:eeFiron wrote:vimcasualsax3 wrote:Nano.lockharte wrote:meh, i guess it's like the old emacs vs vi debate

But getting the wax out of the cable when I'm through is a pain, so I don't do it often.
The thing is that I actually have done what I said in situations where it would have been more appropriate to use a text editor.Gil_Hamilton wrote:Some days I stick a USB cable into my ear and just think files onto the hard drive.Jikmo wrote:Psh, you people and your text editorsGil_Hamilton wrote:EDITadventure_of_link wrote:eeFiron wrote:vimcasualsax3 wrote:Nano.lockharte wrote:meh, i guess it's like the old emacs vs vi debate

^ Uh... MacBooks can't run OS X Jaguar. Tiger is the first version (that made it outside Cupertino) that supports Intel Macs. (Plus, if you bought it a month ago, it came with Tiger)
Anyway, I guess this is just the result of going to an engineering college, but most of the people who use Macs here are guys. A large percentage of them being UNIX geeks who got tired of (or can't stand) Linux.
I'm triple booting OS X Tiger, Win XP and Ubuntu Fiesty Fawn on my MacBook Pro C2D, so OS wars don't affect me.

It's about 50-50 here. I had OSX installed on my laptop for a little while for that reason, but the lack of a decent driver for my video card made me get rid of it (was tired of nothing working right graphics wise). I now just have Windows and Arch Linux installed, but I tend to use Windows more often because there's no decent video driver for Linux either... on top of some other hard ware problems I've been having that require me to use some software to get around them... Damn HP laptops...Krade wrote: Anyway, I guess this is just the result of going to an engineering college, but most of the people who use Macs here are guys. But the people here who use Macs tend not to be Unix people. They tend to be people who, by getting a Mac, suddenly think that they're Unix people but don't know a goddamn thing. They'll talk about how they learned to use a few console commands like it's something special, and they try to talk to the people who are using Linux about how they can do all that on their Macs, but when the Linux people are actually doing anything, they just get quiet.

OS X tends to work well with Apple hardware, considering it's not supposed to run on HP notebooks.Jikmo wrote:It's about 50-50 here. The typical Mac user is a dumbass that owned an iPod, saw the (horrible) Mac ads and decided to buy one. However, due to the degree I'm taking, most of the people I know that are using OS X are friends from college that are/were Linux users who bought a MacBook after the PPC -> Intel switch.Jikmo wrote:But the people here who use Macs tend not to be Unix people. On the contrary, just looking at the saling figures, the Ipod has just sold more Ipods, instead of more computers.Krade wrote:The typical Mac user is a dumbass that owned an iPod, saw the (horrible) Mac ads and decided to buy one. Most of the people that own mac computers own them because of enviroment pressure (Graphic designers and the like, because the whole family owns one).

I go to Carnegie Mellon though, which aside from MIT and CalTech, is the biggest tech savy school in America (tied with MIT and CalTech for #1 in Computer Science)Krade wrote: The typical Mac user is a dumbass that owned an iPod, saw the (horrible) Mac ads and decided to buy one. But maybe it's just the case that the Linux geeks are just more geeky here. There are a few Unix->Mac OSX converts here, but they're far outnumbered by the Mac fanboys and the pure Linux people.

Carnegie Mellon has these huge iMac computer labs around, too. We used them when I was at a programming competition there.
I go to Robert Morris, who does not support running any OS other than Windows XP in its residence halls, which really blows, and they only have a couple of Macs laying around in random labs.
Windows Vista, Linux, and MacOS X do not work properly in our residence halls without hacking.
I lub it here. NOT.

vista is trying to make it harder, but honestly you can rape all sorts of software senseless and steal all you want to on any OS as long as you are savvy enough.

I don't know why would somebody want to pirate Vista. If you don't can't download updates (and its pretty robust anti-piracy software), you might as well not even try getting online on that piece of crap.Panzer88 wrote:vista is trying to make it harder, but honestly you can rape all sorts of software senseless and steal all you want to on any OS as long as you are savvy enough.

Even before Vista was released many came up with various ways to get around the update problem.Corronchilejano wrote:I don't know why would somebody want to pirate Vista. Don't use Microsoft Office 2007 for serious work if you're used to any older version... it pointlessly rearranges a lot of things. I have a university course which uses Excel all the time and Office 2007 has made it annoying. Anything in Excel I need to learn is written with the older versions in mind (and that's in the latest textbook which was just released).lockharte wrote:i don't need to pirate the OS. i'll probably buy a computer that has vista installed, anyway. what i do need is the newest microsoft office, it looks pretty sweet.
Also keep in mind if you buy a new computer with Vista installed it won't be Vista Ultimate unless you pay extra. And as we know MS removes some essential things from their "lower-end" operating systems all them time (the lack of multi CPU support in XP home for example :/). And I also heard something about the lower-end Vista versions not supporting the same amount of RAM which Vista Ultimate does.
I tried Vista, took a good look, had driver issues, switched back to XP Pro.
Very true. They are usually quite nice. They have a lot of huge computer clusters on campus, at least a hundred more computers than people. There are also huge Windows and Linux clusters.kevman wrote:Carnegie Mellon has these huge iMac computer labs around, too. We used them when I was at a programming competition there.
I'm not trying to bash people who own Macs by the way. There are Mac people who own Macs and don't think that they're 2x better than PCs and that owning a Mac and learning a few console commands makes them as knowledgeable as Linux people. They just.. seem to be a minority. More often than not, it seems to be that Mac people start off thinking that their Macs are amazingly better than comparable PCs and that by learning some console commands they've become Unix gurus, but (at least on my campus) they're set straight.

At mine in one of the main study halls in the computer science and engineering building they have an entire section of macs next to the section of PCs. I forgot to mention, I've only ONCE seen a man use one, every other time it was a woman. I've been there regularly for the past semester. Then again the amount of men vs women I've seen with mac laptops was about equal.Clements wrote:At my University, almost everything uses Windows XP. There is a Mac in my department that is used to operate the fluorescence microscope, but that's about it.
Off topic: Clements would you mind if I copy what's in your sig? It would be much more useful to other users than my previous sig (which likely did nothing).
my dad uses Excel professionally for work, he says if you know the program well it doesn't take much time at all to adjust and that the interface changes are good. I wouldn't be saying this but the man is the KING of Excel spreadsheets.
