Where THG excels in music and battle system it unfortunately lacks in story and graphics :/ I'm not usually one for omfggraphics but goddamn, THG can look really bad in places. The whole prerendered look just doesn't work most of the time.

The graphics are pre-rendered. They could've done so with the first SNES games if the technology would've been available.

how does pre-rendered equal not good? The majority of games in the late SNES life cycle (besides special chip games) COULD have been done on the hardware back when the SNES was released. The point is how well it looks for the system and the fact that it wasn't done until later, because the developers didn't have access to the tools to do so.creaothceann wrote:The graphics are pre-rendered. Too easy I believe. WAY to easy. Kinda like the same reason I thought Chrono Trigger wasn't the best game ever.Firon wrote:Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga is a much better game.

Yeah, it was easy, but so was SMRPG. I still thought it was a lot of fun, I loved how they expanded the battle system. Plus, it had a TON of hilarious moments. You can't tell me you don't love the Luigi abuse.
Partner in Time's battles were more fun, but I didn't like it as much. Not a whole lot of story, plus the lack of a proper overworld was kinda "meh." The babies rocked though.

Well in a sense Super Mario RPG is quite three-dimensional and it felt fuller as a game, than did Paper Mario/PM2, Mario and Luigi's Super Star Saga and the upcoming Super Paper Mario
. I played a little bit of Paper Mario and decided it wasn't as good as Super Mario RPG. That's probably why i didn't chance to play Mario and Luigi's Super Star Saga. The transformation from 3d to 2d didn't really appeal to me.

I don't know if it can be considered hard (not too hard except a few memorable fights imho) but Tales of Phantasia is one of the games that I love playing most on Zsnes. Great atmosphere, awesome music, good story development, with both a good twist of humor and some sad moments also.
I place it in the 2. place just behind CT in my book

I dunno, CT really wowed me on the SNES, for a variety of reasons. I was relatively young when it was released and had a fairly difficult time finding various endings. The tunes and graphics were top notch, the tech system was decent and I was pretty well drawn into the story. I feel it is worthy of all its praise.

You said "the graphics are amazing for the SNES". I take that literally & say that's not true, since for the SNES it's just data like anything else. Better would've been "the graphics are amazing for an SNES game".
darkbenny:
Yup.

I didn't say that.Panzer88 wrote:how does pre-rendered equal not good?

Another RPG I will recommend is Dual Orb II, translated by Nightcrawler's Translation Corporation. It doesn't take too long to finish and is a pretty straightforward traditional style RPG. I think Chrono Trigger was a good game, but not as great as people make it out to be, the game length left much to be desired for me. Earthbound is another overrated game, I couldn't stand the game personally although I forced myself to finish it back when it first came out. The 7th Saga was one of the most underappreciated SNES RPG's in my opinion, a game that actually made you incorporate strategy.

CT is too easy for gameplay, but it excels at the storytelling.RPGer wrote:Another RPG I will recommend is Dual Orb II, translated by Nightcrawler's Translation Corporation. Earthbound is one of those crazy RPGs where you shouldn't take it too seriously (literally speaking).
7th Saga didn't have "much" in a way of storytelling, and most of the time is spent on level grinding to survive. Boss battles were just "wait until they waste all their MP, then annihilate them". What would have been interesting if the game would enable something cool if you beat the game entirely with every possible main character. Unfortunately that was not done for replay value. The only actual challenge were fighting the other characters, as they were simply overpowered in those battles.

Re: which rpg
Well, if you're going for nice and simple, you may want to give Rudora no Hihou a try. If I recall correctly there's a new translation out which makes more sense than the earlier ones.sewercake wrote: I'm looking for a nice, simple rpg thats not gonna take too long, just something more relaxing than chrono trigger or ff3.
thanks in advance
The only thing not simple about it is the magic system, but you're best off limiting yourself to spells you find and basic combinations of spells anyway. (fully exploiting the magic system, at least in the english translation, lets you create ultra-cheap, somewhat powerful healing spells, making the game a bit too easy)
"Quoted by Deathlike2" - The only actual challenge were fighting the other characters, as they were simply overpowered in those battles.
That's not exactly true, there are plenty of challenging battles while soloing. Most people that recruit a companion early can say that, but try playing through the majority of the game with just your main character, you'll find many regular encounters that can decimate you. Off of the top of my head when first arriving in Dowain, Mutants can be a tough battle with their powerful Ice1 and Blizzard1 spells, also around the Polasu area an encounter of three Flames can also wipe your character out in the early to mid 20's just to name a few. There's plenty more strategy to playing a solo game, it makes you think that's why I love it.

I'll have to do a run of that explicitly one day. In any case, that just means a lot more level grinding. The challenge is pretty good, but the story makes "slightly" more sense as we don't know what happens to the partner at the end of a normal game (really, it is an expected but very weak ending).RPGer wrote:"Quoted by Deathlike2" - The only actual challenge were fighting the other characters, as they were simply overpowered in those battles.
