Dragon Quest V

I'm playing the Dragon Quest V translation and wanted to use the game genie codes to give me some extra cash... but the codes aren't workinng. I think its because the translation moves everything around and what's supposed to change just isn't there... can you help me?

I'm using Snes9x, it has a cheat finder as well, but I can't seem to find which of the values is the gold.

use exact value search, change your amount of GP, search for new value, lather, rinse, repeat until you have only one possible address for the GP value.

I played to the point after you are changed to stone, but I lost interest after that as I would need to do some major leveling up.

I don't know the zsnes (btw i'm too stupid to learn the name of the emulator) Emulator, but with Snes9x you can change the speed of the game with shift and + or -, with fast mode it's very easy to level up fast and make also a lot of cash this way, and it's not cheating!

p.S. heee, i'm not a dumb hehe

You can't do it on the real machine. It is cheating. Period.
I don't think cheating is so bad, but saying 'turbo isn't cheating' is quite hypocritical.

It's not cheating, IMO. Yes. you can't do it on a real machine, but if you are ONLY doing it to cut down on time needed to level up, what's the harm?

Now, if it was on a time limit for contest, well..

Well do you consider slowdown as cheating then ?

Because in SO I can power level using Gabriel fights as soon as I get to Ionis using slowed down fights (so that I can manage when exactly to launch the shichiseisouhazan for it to connect first and launch the others' techs/spell to be ready in the short intervals).
Without any leveling beforehand.

Which is really not feasible at standard speed (even less at zsnes-battle speed).

Cheating always meets at least one of two criteria:

a.) Deception
b.) Breaking established rules

Neither exists for a person going through a single-player game alone, unless they actually establish rules for themselves.

Contests have pre-established guidelines (in addition to a usual set of common sense guidelines). That is why it is often simple to determine whether a player is legit or not.

The same guidelines have no place outside of contests. The player should do what they feel makes the game the most enjoyable, including making the game easier, harder, faster, or slower as they see fit.

Restricting yourself to the same environment as the original console is good for nostalgia value and people who cherish the exact way the game was first played. While I respect and follow that path myself much of the time, I refuse to say that people who do not agree with my self-enforced guidelines are cheating.

Of course you can!
You can fight and leveling up as long as you want also on the real machine, the emulator just save time, thats all and no cheating

I find cheats useful, but *not* for playing (I even hate using walkthroughs the first time I play a game), I think cheats are great, but for documenting, and making some FAQs, you can use them to see every item in the game, among some other things.

About the Fast Fwd subject... I also think of it as cheating... as playing the game that way isn't how the game was meant to be played... well... if programmers wanted to give you the option to play and level up way faster they'd add some sort of option for it... like on Chrono Cross when playing on New Game +, or several RPGs, where you can disable battle animations and so saving time, or programmers would make the enemies to give more experience.

Well, that's correct... especially when you've paid for the game... but for a game you haven't paid? if the game disappointed you, why the heck do you continue playing it? just because you want to have one more game on your list of finised games? I guess that's one of those moments when you deserve a "get a life" reply.

This is just my opiniont tho. But I see your points, and accept them, plus Kagerato's post was one of the best arguments about cheating I've ever read.

Here's a reason for cheating/fast forwarding. Sometimes I'llplay an RPG for the story. The only way tosee the story is to advance in the game. Sometiems the gameplya is not the greatest. Some cheats or fast forwarding makes it a much more rewarding experience.

I have played several games with great stories, but lackluster gameplay.It's worth playing for the story.

Riiight. So based on your argument, using game genie to level up to 99 by punching in a code is not cheating. It just saves time so you don't have to spend 200 hours leveling up.

I chaeat all the time. I'm a married 28, year old college student. Don't have time to do it the hard way. I play for the story anyway.
