help with choosing DVD Burner's
ok, i know it's not normal for me to ask for help, and usually i give info that is incorrect on stuff but, could you guys help me just this once?
im after a DVD burner that can at least make perfect 1:1 copies of CD's, but also making perfect 1:1 DVD's (im not sure if this is possible) would be an added bonus as well... because i'm looking to backup my PSX games and there arn't cracks that i could find for some of my games, like crash bandicoot 2 etc.
i use alcohol 120% and the default PSX profile but the console still says it's an invalid disk and in brackets for my DVD Recorder it says (0:1) so i assume it does not do 1:1 copies =\

Re: help with choosing DVD Burner's
DVD for sure isn't possible. This is by design. The non-writable disks have data outside the writable area of the writable disks.franpa wrote: im after a DVD burner that can at least make perfect 1:1 copies of CD's, but also making perfect 1:1 DVD's (im not sure if this is possible) would be an added bonus as well...
That's not what that means.... in brackets for my DVD Recorder it says (0:1) so i assume it does not do 1:1 copies =\
But 1:1 depends greatly on what you're doing.
Remember, Playstation disks use features that fall outside the realm of standard CD-ROM(in fact, most copy-protected disks do to some degree).

I just go to newegg and pick up the cheapest sony burner (it's a rebadge of something else but wgaf)
asking for 1:1 copies is retarded.
any dvd burner will copy a dvd movie. software will decrypt the dvd data. it will play in your dvd player (a good dvd player will read any speed dvds, and old crappy or cheap ones will only read disks burned at like 4x. it's not a 1:1 copy but you'll never know the difference.
any dvd burner will burn a copy of a cd. the cd will play in your audio player. you will still need a mod chip in a ps1/ps2 and some sort of hack for a pc game. the burner and software ain't gonna make a difference.
dvd burners will not read wii or gamecube disks, but the drive I just got ten minutes ago is currently dumping a wii game. but it's not a burner. so I'll use my $35 sony burner I got from newegg 1.5 years ago to burn the image.

0:1 is the IDE bus location and has nothing to do with the drive's capabilities.
DVD burners are pretty much all the same these days. They're all rebranded drives from only a couple of manufacturers. I have a Lite-On 8x ($90 3 years ago) and a Sony 16x ($35 at Walmart last year) and they perform pretty much the same.
As far as making exact copies of CD's, drives will generally all read and burn subcodes, so you shouldn't have any problems there. As for DVD's, data discs should work exactly like a CD.
DVD movies are another story. You have to remove CSS copy protection. There's no way around that. And unless you're using dual layer discs, you'll have to recompress the video, remove special features and audio tracks, or probably a combination of both. Assuming you don't have to recompress the video, the quality will be exactly the same as the original disc.
If you're concerned about burn quality, it has a lot more to do with the discs than the drive. Don't buy cheap media. TDK or Memorex DVD+R discs are pretty good for the most part. I'm not going to start a flame war, but DVD-R is technologically inferior and not suitable for any data you value. I don't usually burn faster than 8x because it really doesn't finish much faster than at 8x. That's because drives go through 3 different speed zones, 4x, 8x and 16x, and you can see the difference just by looking at the bottom of the disc after burning. Burning at 8x burns at a more consistent speed throughout the disc. That and my DVD player doesn't like discs burned at 16x but plays the same discs fine when burned at 8x.

yes, I use only memorex dvd+rs. I don't know the reviews on them and shit, but they have always worked perfectly for me. my favorite cd-rs of all time are imation. I burn all my dvds at 4x, and all my cds at 12x (cause my cd burner only goes to 12x.)

I'd stick to name brand discs. They really aren't much more expensive and they're a lot more reliable. The off-brand ones are probably all rebrands of the same Chinese brands. TDK is probably the best, since most of their discs are Japanese made Taiyo-Yuden (sp?) or Ricoh discs, which are 2 of the best manufacturers for reliability and shelf life.franpa wrote:is mag media any good? kodak gold? akai? I just bought for the first time a 100 pack of tdk cd-rs (I'll give them a whirl) it was $15. and my typical 50 pack of memorex dvd+rs for $25. and also a three pack of pny 1gig usb flash drives for $30.
also my cd burner is an 8 year old plextor. burns 12x, never once skipped a beat. plextor to me is one of the best. meanwhile my cheap sony rebadge dvd burner lost its cd-r reading capabilities about a year and a half after purchasing.

that was really stupid by you, then.
i mean, samsung has an 18X DVD burner with SATA and lightscribe with 12X DVD-RAM for like 40 bucks. and you get a burner made by ASUS?
honestly, they are not really known for DVD burners. you just ignored all kinds of sound advice.
odds are your burner will be okay and all, but still. WHY DID YOU MAKE THE TOPIC IF YOU DIDN'T CARE?
