Can a virus/malware be embedded in an audio file?

Can a virus/malware be embedded in an audio file?

Post by lockharte »

My google searching says no, but what do people here think. I have a suspicious file that can't be opened by any of the music players or audio editors on my computer.

It could, but more likely than not, the app is usually supposed to properly handle opening the file...

If you think there's a virus, go fucking scan it first.

The first thing to do is post the file to an online scan site (I highly recommend 'VirusTotal'),then open the file with Notepad and/or a Hex editor and try to analyze it.Finally, get a good A/V player that's capable of opening incomplete files and play it.
Good luck.

franpa, please get a clue. The extension has nothing to do with a file having a virus.

On the other hand, it helps a lot to know if the file is using the right extension when being played in a media player.. but it is up to the media player to handle the data properly (and perhaps inform the user that the extension does not match the content). At worse, it isn't an audio file to begin with.
