HQ / NTSC Filter Crash
When I click either the HQ filter or the NTSC filter, ZSNES crashes out.
This happens with versions 1.51, 1.50 and 1.42, using an Nvidia 8600 GTS with both the latest drivers and an earlier set (not sure what version exactly).
Anyone have any suggestions as to what I could do to fix the problem?

Strangely enough, I can enable NTSC and HQx Filters without any problems in the latest versions of VirtuaNes, Nestopia, and Snes9x, but that really doesn't help me out, because the former two are NES emulators and I'd rather not use the latter. I thought the information might possibly prove to be useful in some way though.

Both _seem_ to work fine. I'm not sure how I might test the system memory to see if it's the culprit.Agozer wrote:Are you using System or Video memory in e.g. Nestopia?
I also tried a few games on Bsnes last night and I can use its HQ2x filter without any problems, but something about it doesn't look right.

HQxx lags like hell on my computer if I use Video, but it's silky smooth when I use System.

Actually, bsnes uses Direct3D9 by default, so that one can turn off the linear filter upon resizing if they like. DD7 doesn't let you do that, sadly.
If you want to verify that the problem is DirectDraw7, go to bsnes->Settings->Configuration->Advanced and set "system.video" to "dd". Restart the emulator. If it's still working, DirectDraw isn't your problem.
Also, you're probably noticing the difference because bsnes defaults to both modifying the gamma and correcting the aspect ratio, making the output appear more like a TV.
You can turn off gamma correction in the Settings->Configuration->Raster Settings screen (click 'Standard Preset'), and you can turn off aspect ratio correction via unchecking Settings->Video Mode->Correct Aspect Ratio.

I think this is a driver issue ...
Hi --
I have had this same problem (tried 1.51 and 1.42) on my computer as well. Like you, I have a GeForce 8000 series card (8600GT), but I am running Windows XP x64 and the latest non-beta drivers (Forceware 158.22). I think the video problems are strictly driver related ... from what I hear, there are many undocumented application compatibility issues that exist within the current non-beta driver set (Neverwinter Nights failing to load, for instance). So, don't fret over it too much ... I wouldn't worry about memory issues or anything of that sort.

I had the same problem with XP and a 8800gts. I would crash the second I activated the HQ filter. However, when I manually edited the Zsnesw.cfg file. It worked fine. Just edit the HQfilter section as such....
hqFilter=1
; Set HQ*x level [2..4]
; Recommended min resolutions
; HQ2x = 512x448
; HQ3x = 768x672
; HQ4x = 1024x896
hqFilterlevel=4
The only things you should have to change are hqFilter=1 and hqfilterlevel=4
