Patching Woes (dragon quest 6)
Yes I read the FAQ. The rom is good, and I have the IPS patch, as well as read the snes link instructions. Soft patching does nothing, and hard patching corrupts the rom, even after removing the header I get black screen. I tried using ips.exe and snestl12.exe. I use Zsnes. Help please?

Why are you using those ridiculous outdated tools?
Use NSRT for rom verification and ips header adder/removal tool that comes with it.
If soft patching is failing, it is probably because you aren't renaming the IPS properly and/or it is not placed in the correct folder.
Make sure you define a Save directory and put the IPS file in it.
Also, rename the IPS file appropriately..
If it is called
DQ6.smc
The patch needs to be renamed
DQ6.ips
If you prefer a hardpatching tool, use LunarIPS.

Define "it does nothing". Does the game not play? Is the text not translated? BE SPECIFIC.
It seems to me that you grabbed a NoProgress's DQ6 patch.
Anyways, please output what NSRT tells you about the ROM.
Edit: The patch works fine, so it means that you are patching against an already prepatched ROM (which is why this is failing).
So, you are gonna have to find a clean copy of the ROM (and don't bother asking where to get it either).

The rom I have is japanese. and the chksm is ok. It simply does not translate anything. When I hard patch it, it gives a black screen.
Dragonquest 6
Type: normal
Interleaved: no
Bank: hi
Chksm: ok
Video: ntsc
crc32:33304519
That is the exact startup data I get, softpatched or the copy. Hardpatched is black screen
Yes I got the NoProgress patch. Is there any other?

It seems like you are unsuccessfully softpatching. Create a save folder and set the Save directory in ZSNES to that. Then, put the IPS file (and SRM file if you wish) in that folder.
The only other thing I can think of is that your IPS renaming may not be correct (I mistaken for a 1 for instance).
Edit: One other thing, make sure that in Config->Options that use Enable IPS Auto-Patching is checked.
Edit2: AFAIK, there is another one (it happens to be related to the forum you are posting in), but it is more likely that you are having naming or folder/path issues. When a game is soft patched, ZSNES displays "IPS" on the screen when the game is loaded. The thing is, the patch is working for me, so there is something on your end that's simply not making it happen.

I have it set up, so every game is its own folder. DQ6 only has the files I mentioned above. the other games are in other folders. (Love Star ocean by the way. I played 2 and 3, so may as well play the first one. (And save a specific item for puffy.
))
I will change the save path from the root to that folder then, see what happens.... No effect.
EDIT: Yes, autopatch is checked.

http://www.romhacking.net/trans/344/ - I downloaded that patch just today, and it does work for me. It requires a the DQ6 ROM to have a header.

Headers are extra bist of data that are stored at the beginning of the rom. They are harmless for emus, and they are used in copiers.
Anyways, some IPS patches rely on the ROMs having a header (because some roms are generally distributed with the header, this being one of them). When the header is missing, the patching goes wrong as the offsets that are stored in the IPS patch are generally 512 bytes off (they are the size of the headers).
What you need to do is check with NSRT and see if there is a header.. if there isn't one, tell NSRT to add one.

Dude, as I said, use NSRT. There is a internal game name that displays when ZSNES is loaded.. not a header.talhoe wrote:The header is dragonquest6. The patch messes up the header though...
What header do you have?

Imho editing the patch is better than modding the ROM.
