Japanese SFC vs American SNES

After years of using it, I discovered that the Ascii Pad D-Pad totally sucked for Tetris Attack.ReRuss wrote:I liked my SNES and just didnt care , but I got an AsciiPad which had buttons like the Jap/Eur controller and since then I never used the normal pads again...
If I had to shoose I'd pick the Gen 2

Vega is a common Spanish surname, so I prefer the U.S. name change.Snark wrote:Oh ya...If you're gonna copy a real live boxer, might as well change the name altogether in the US...instead of just doing a name switch between characters...talk about lazy lolNot to mention the M. Bison and Balrog switcheroo. I still confuse my friends when I call the boxer Balrog.
For those who don't know the story:
In Japan: the evil Shadowloo/guy in red is named Vega and the boxer is M.Bison
Outside Japan: Shadowloo guy is M.Bison and boxer is Balrog
The reason for that is that, In Street Fighter (1) the boxer character is actually in fact a direct ripoff of Mike TYson (Tyson --> Bison)
When the game was imported outside Japan to avoid potential lawsuit or something, they just did a namechange.
yeah the color pads released in the states weren't made by nintendo and weren't very durable at all. A friend had one and it pretty much became unusable in the space of a year. I'm sure it could have lasted longer with more care but it wasn't nearly as good as a nintendo pad (SFC or SNES)

I've never noticed a prob with my d-pad , the entire pad had been as good or better than the normCZroe wrote:After years of using it, I discovered that the Ascii Pad D-Pad totally sucked for Tetris Attack.ReRuss wrote:I liked my SNES and just didnt care , but I got an AsciiPad which had buttons like the Jap/Eur controller and since then I never used the normal pads again...

Heh, this gamepad talk reminded me of something.
The plug end of one of my SNES pads broke apart when I was attempting to remove it. With it popped out all of the pins.
Gnarly. It'll still work, but how do I know the order of the colors? (This was back in 1993.)
So I just looked into the end of the other controller's plug to see which 5 of the 7 pins were populated.
Then I said. "Let's try the resistor color code order, ignoring the missing colors" (Black, Brown, Red, Orange... etc.) Worked the first time.
I was in fifth grade at the time. True story.

I'll take the static originalcreaothceann wrote:Hey, this was before the internet tubes were laid.Snark wrote:I'd say one would have, even as a 13 years old, to be seriously horny to get excited when seeing some badly drawn picture of a woman...
Anyway - the US cover shows more action; the original cart art is quite static in comparison.

over the "action oriented"

thanks
But you're right. It seem to be a common theme: US remakes (as horrible as they were) usually focused more on action than their Japanese counterparts.

Basically, yes. Hence the "action oriented" in quotes.Corronchilejano wrote:Homoerotic action. But you're right. It seem to be a common theme: US remakes (as horrible as they were) usually focused more on action than their Japanese counterparts.
What was up with hiring obviously incompetent artists for game covers back then? The cover was much more important for selling a game then so it doesn't make sense.

This is a picture with broken perspective and shit everywhere of a guy running around a theme park. I'm sure any member of this board could create a more appealing cover than that in two hours.
Edit: There.

Try posting the URL, like this one, which is the original US MegaMan logo:
http://www.mobygames.com/game/mega-man/ ... erId,1990/
That way it doesn´t get blocked.
PS: Ok, THAT guy looks Japanese.

Actually, funny you say that. The orignal story behind the cover is the artist had this thrown in his lap to do in 1 hour with only a small premise of what the game was.Johan_Hanberg wrote:What was up with hiring obviously incompetent artists for game covers back then? I don't doubt that it's true, but it's no excuse. Any talented artist would still know how perspective, basic anatomy and lighting are supposed to work, even if he only had an hour.

Seriously, even with a small grasp of the plot and game, you should know that the main character isn't GOLDEN.whicker wrote:OK, art critic.blackmyst wrote:Starman Ghost wrote:Actually, funny you say that. I´ve heard that story before. Where was it anyway...?Starman Ghost wrote:Actually, funny you say that. The orignal story behind the cover is the artist had this thrown in his lap to do in 1 hour with only a small premise of what the game was.
With only ONE hour to work on it, he came up with SOMETHING that had color at least.

Urg...The above MM1 "art" box is an obvious (bad) ripoff of Tron:

...which has nothing to do with Rockman/Megaman...which goes back to what I was saying when I said artwork localization in that era were just horrible.
Seriously, I think the artwork localization said a lot about the mentality of those who were decision makers at the time in the US."Maybe try to do some Tron-like stuff or something...Maybe some poor guy will think "Hey, that's the Tron movie" and buy the friggin' thing"
"You sure boss?"
"Hey, we're in the friggin Video games business: No one is gonna buy this stuff unless they're fooled into thinking it's some other stuff"
