how to install ps2 -> ps3 controller USB adapter?

Post by franpa »

it installed fine and was detected as a "twin stick controller" (or whatever) but suddenly windows decided to say the device is malfunctioning and as such is now known as a "unknown device" and i cant figure out how to manually change it back to what it originally was detected as.

ive tried unplugging it and plugging it into a different port etc. but it has no effect on the issue. there are no drivers provided with the adpater and since it converts the ps2 controller connector to USB it should work with windows :P tho the packaging only mentions compatibility with the ps3.

Try plugging the adapter into all of the other available ports, that way you burn them all out. Heck, the USB connector fits snugly into the Ethernet ports, try that too.

In all seriousness, there probably isn't a driver that works properly for it. There's also the unfortunate possibility that it uses a fake Manufacturer / Device ID in which Windows selected the wrong driver for it.

but it did work, all im after is a way to manually choose from a list of joypad/gamepad drivers for it. this was a very simple task under windows 9x.

it'd pry help if you'd specify what OS you're running, but for windahs maybe plug it in, go into device manager, right click the controller, hit uninstall or update driver.

my specs are in my signature, i've looked at tho's options and even run the "add new hardware wizard" and i can get a list of devices, but the only thing related to gampads is "gameports" which isnt what im after. under windows 9x they had a whole category dedicated to joypads and gamepads, or i'm pretty sure it did.

I'm preeeetty sure it's still there as "Sound, video and game controllers", just like it was in 98.

This only applies to those controllers plugged into the sound card's midi/gameport connector. And it's still there. Control Panel-> Game Controllers, Add button.

Try what phonymike said.

maybe fire up device manager (control panel, system, hardware, device manager) with the controller unplugged. make note of any usb stuff and human interface devices. then plug the controller in and refresh. you should see the controller pop up, it pry won't be called "franpa's ps2 controller" so look around, it might be called HID device under usb or smth. uninstall the driver from there, then it will reinstall the drivers if you add new hardware.

hell those things are cheap, maybe windows is saying it's malfunctioning because it's broken. try it on another pc.

tried, windows keeps detecting it and listing it as a "unknown device" and uninstalling/reinstalling doesn't change what its detected as. immediately connecting it results in windows saying it malfunctioned during detection and then it successfully installs it as a "unknown device" and is listed under Universal Serial Bus Controllers.

i guess either the device got screwed due to it not being designed for a PC (i doubt it tho) or the particular one i bought was dodge to begin with.
