DVD player doesn't read DVD-RW
Okay, I've found software that lets me capture video and burn it to a DVD-RW just fine. The problem? No matter which DVD authoring software I use, the DVD can only be read on my computer. The DVD player can't read them! I looked on my Sony DVD player and under the supported formats, DVD-RW was on the list. So, if that's the case, why the crap doesn't it read them!?

do you really not know that DVD movies you buy in stores are very different from just burning movie files onto a disc?
DVD movies have to adhere to certain standards so that standalone players will bother with them. like the 720x480 (unless you're doing something fancy like anamorphic, which i doubt), mpeg-2 encoding, video_ts folders, *.vob and *.ifo files, and the like.
your player says it can play dvd-rw's because it can accept those discs, when burned to the proper standards. like home videos that are encoded using nero vision, and burnt under the dvd movie profile. because the laser needs to work harder to read burnt media. it's not a magic "any dvd-rw with anything on it will work" label.
your lack of information just makes me assume that you made some files and slapped them onto a standard data disc, which no standalone player will touch unless you got lucky and your files are in a Divx format that your player will like. but that also assumes a divx compatible dvd player. but since your files aren't playing, that isn't the case. and since you don't like to say 1)what software you're using or 2)how you're actually burning them, do honestly expect anyone to read your mind and help you out here?

Hmm...what about Ulead DVD Movie Maker 6.0; it may not be free but does it have features that allow one to make DVD player compatible DVD-RWs?
Edit - okay, this is how I burn them; I get a file, like an .mpeg, and while using something like DP CD/DVD burner (which has a plugin that lets one make movie DVDs) and then I follow the instructions.
