Dreamcast imports

Post by Snark »

Does anyone knows if it's possible to play imports Dreamcast games (original pressed discs... not cdr copies) with a boot disc like the Ech*lon boot disc? Essentially with the same method used for booting copied games iow.

Are you planning on buying some imported DC games?
Try out CCleaner and other free software at Piriform

Nope.
Pressed Dreamcast games are region-coded. You can't just dropt eghm in and play them.

...

Wait... you use a boot disk for your reet warez?

WHY?

Because some cd images are non bootable (hope this doesn't degenerate into a p*racy thread/lecture...because I'm precisely trying to use an original authorized game...unless you consider not playing game in their intended region as illegal but that would be extreme...)

Wait, we can run unlicensed code on the DC and also foreign medias (cdrs vs original GD-rom discs) but we can't boot import with the same method?? Man, bummer...

I've honestly got no idea if CD boot disks work for GD-ROMs.

Hell, I've never had any CD stuff that needed a boot disk.

Yes you can totally run import games with a boot disc. I do it all the time with Space Channel 5 Part 2. The only thing I am not sure of is if utopia will let you or not. I'm 99% sure utopia will work though. Otherwise, just pirate DC-X.

Reruss:
Sega actually helped players handle Shenmue 2 in the U.S. Great thing is, it has NTSC mode in it, not 100% sure if its user selectable, but I think theres a cheat you can input to activate it. A standard boot disc should work fine tho.

dude it seriously would be cheaper to just buy a new dreamcast, they're only like $50 and most these days ship playing all regions.
Seriously, what kind of asshole makes an old-school 2D emulator that requires a Core 2 to get full speed? >:(
What OTHER purpose would a mod chip have ona Dreamcast?
It ALREADY boots CD-R unmodded, and it's not like you can burn GD-ROM anyways.

Seriously. Specially if you can in fact load GD-Rom imports without a modchip (to be verified) If you can, well they're essentially pointless.

The whole "playing copies is immoral" arguments put aside there are two reasons one would want actual Dreamcast GD-Rom discs.

First, some games (Shenmue 2 for example) cannot fit on 700cdrs...So they had to cut some stuff off like npc voices or downsample movies.

And secondly, and this one seems to be less known is that most cdrs copies -when played on the Dreamcast, are much NOISIER. That is because the laser trail or whatever it's called has to move a lot more because the data on the cdr are farther away than they are on the GD-ROM because those hold more data in the same physical space (I think GD-roms can go up to 1GB or something like that, hence "GD"roms".)
-And yes, I know about data padding because Dreamcast discs are read from the outside to inside. But I tried it with Resident Evil Code Veronica (which cannot be padded anyway because it's already near 700) and the difference between cdr and gdrom in noise was obvious. Some small games like Crazy Taxi are not affected, but seriously, anyone who saids it's bullshit try it before.

and third, well some imports I can't find on to**ents......

edit: also, weren't there some very specific Toshiba or some other Japanese burner that could actually burn GD-roms? Or was it just read? I dunno I read something like that once

1.2 Gigabytes on a GD-Rom

BTW - I dunno if anybody wants em , but I got an extra Shenmue set if anybody wants em cheap , no case or 4th disc (4th disc was online trade store which is gone so that disc is useless) , so I'll let em go dirt sheap cuz I have no use for em , unless somebody has a normal video cable they wanna trade that not RF

I kinda wish I could find sega marine fishin on trnts , last time I tried usin mine it gave everything unlocked at start...

There were rumors that a specific model of PC drive could read and/or write GD-ROM with a custom firmware.

As far as I know, none of the rumors carried any real weight.

now that there are emus people should really start putting the GDRom rips online because the CD rips are kind of sucky for some games.

I already have Shenmue 1, but I want Shenmue 2 for dreamcast, the PAL version, and if you want to trade your stuff over from the first game you need a PAL Shenmue 1 too don't ya?
