56k Modem

Post by badinsults »

I'm probably going to be travelling around for most of next year, so I will likely give my current computer to my parents. However, they live out in the country, and can only connect with a dialup connection. I was wondering what a good 56k modem is that works in Linux without much hastle.

I've got a copy of linspire which works with winmodems (it's "very fucking old", not to mention it worked with my lucent win modem, but eh.)

that said, ubuntu can obtain drivers for winmodems in three clicks, so..
<Nach> so why don't the two of you get your own room and leave us alone with this stupidity of yours?

From what I have read, certain Winmodems only work with a driver that costs $20. I do not want one of these.

hunt down an external, serial modem. that way you are guaranteed it'll work in any OS.

- Yes, but don’t change the subject.

PCTEL works under lin, but I'd rather a hardmodem anyday.
The good part about winmodems is that they're easily v92 compatible(for obvious reasons).

Buy any brand you want, just stay away from anything Conexant. There are NO free drivers for them. You must pay more than the price of your modem to get bloody drivers for Linux (that's ridiculous!)
Intel is usually a good choice for Linux users.
Most of the Win(Lin)modems are supported by the smaller Linux distros.
Your best choice is getting an external modem, but the downside is they're much more expensive.
