Low budget PC challenge - Part 1: The 100$ Desktop !

Post by kick »

Building a 100$ diskless desktop is not an easy task.Building one that has good performance is even harder. But the ultimate goal is to do that with all-new parts. Now,that's what I call a challenge :)

If they've managed to make a $100 laptop with good enough performance for the poor, how much performance can you squeeze out of those $100 if you were to design a desktop instead?

Sounds interesting.

Rules:
--------
#1: You have a budget of $100 at your disposal.

#2: You can spend only 20$ on a CPU! *LOL*

#3: You're allowed to spend half of the budget on a GPU...

...but if you do that, you'll end up with only 30$ for the rest of the stuff (some RAM,a cheap motherboard, computer case, keyboard, mouse and a DVD-RW/RAM drive),so you have to plan and use your cash wisely to get the most bang for your 100 buckaroos.

#4: No overclocking

#5: No modding

#6: No recycling of old and/or used parts

Hard drive not needed. A live Linux CD and a blank DVD-RAM disk should do the trick.

Good luck! ..........you'll need it! ;)

So,who's going to take the challenge?

Does [Kevin] Smith masturbate with steel wool too?

- Yes, but don’t change the subject.

Couldn't manage to put together a brand new AM2 system for $100. Went to Newegg/Zipzoomfly and picked the cheapest stuff they had and still came to about $120 (with terrible VIA graphics).

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... otherboard

Motherboard 29.99 with integrated sound and video

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820134191

256 DDR2 ram $5.99

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6819116040
1.6ghz Celeron

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 827101132R $14.99 dvd/CD DRIVE

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6811145077
Case $13

Couldnt do it 102.97 and for maybe $50 this pc could be worlds better.
The case is absolute shit. You could spend $4 more dollars to get a better case. $5 dollars to have 512ram instead of 256. $10 to get a nice DVDR/CDR burner. $10 more to get about double the cpu speed also.

I'm actually using a hundred-dollar PC.

But I cheated. Vidcard and OS were recycled, as were the optical drive, monitor, keyboard, and trackball.

Abuse of rebates was rampant. Mobo was ten bucks. I believe both my 512MB DIMMs were 10 too(one rebate check went to my grandmother's house because it was limit one per household).

'S a Sempron 2800+.

Also, the restraints are retarded.
Why you;d spend 50$ on the GPU and 20$ on the CPU when you won't have a gaming-grade system ANYWAYS is beyond me.
For an all-new sub-100 PC, get a mobo with integrated video and use that.
