best computer case for 200$ AUD?

Post by franpa »

Hey, my BFG 8800GT appears to be overheating due to the fact that graphical glitches only start appearing when the video card reaches around 90+ degree's Celsius and if i keep running the game (black and white 2) then eventually i get a blue screen. the same thing happens with various games.

the fan on the video card works and i can hear it slowly but surely start hitting 100% load around the time i finish the first land in B&W 2.

I'm after a excellent computer case for air flow and welcome any/all suggestions relevant.

franpa, god dammit.

Find a way to increase the fan speed on the card. Hopefully nTune will work. Also, with it being the hottest part of the year where you live, that factor is going against you as well.

Do you already have intake fans on the front of your case? My antec P150 case has room for two 92mm fans, which I did populate. Being temperature activated, they only ever go above idle speed while 3D gaming in summer.

The real goal, I'd say, is to get some airflow onto the card, it's what helped me out when the 7800GT's were acting flaky because of heat. It seemed as if the power supply section of the board was the first to crap out, causing corrupted RAM.

Just focus on pumping a boatload of air into the case (filter fans help to avoid dust problems). Use an exhaust fan in addition to the Power Supply's fan to guide the hot air out. The case exhaust fan should not overpower the intake fans, contrary to what some people think.

Hopefully this helps you out, I've read that card is the best bang/buck right now.

I'm pretty happy with the HD3870 I found for US$200 =)

whicker's advice is perfectly valid - airflow should be balanced in the case, otherwise you just get turbulence and extra wind noise/whistling.

And damn, franpa, there are literally hundreds of cases you can get for that price, including almost every Antec case. I'm getting the distinct impression that you're just launching piles of money in random directions without any real plan.

What case do you have now?

Nice!

Unfortunately, I can't currently use NVIDIA cards in that box - the NVIDIA drivers under Vista don't allow for custom resolutions, and my low-end TV reports 1280x768 instead of its native 1360x768. I was running off a 7600GS for a while, but it started to drive me nuts so I picked up an HD2600XT. That treated me well enough until I saw that deal on the HD3870... yay, impulse buy! :D

Yeah it is, great ventilation and the front LED fans make it look hot. I might order it instead of my x-cruiser.
