The Wii has been hacked...

I don't think any worse of you, if soembody else had some the same thing I would have demanded quotes before I read it. XD I just started the response as I read it, so I wasn't aware it would be so damn long...

In this context, and with my phrasing, they ARE the exact same thing.Rydian wrote:No they're not.Gil_Hamilton wrote:Also:
"The hardware being different " and "The way a program or OS or processer interacts with that hardware specifically being different" are the EXACT same thing.
The second can be thought of as a subset of the first, while the first is a generalization that covers the second.
"Hardware being different" is very general. If I am using the onboard audio of my motherboard, and then insert and use a sound card, the hardware is different. Suddenly I have hardware mixing and no noise from the motherboard interfering with my audio. The hardware is being different. I can still use the same OS and programs, can't I?
I just needed a better explanation, because I don't know all this stuff yet.
I think it was QUITE obvious that I meant the entire system, not just one or two peripherals when I said "An Amiga can't run MacOS, even though both systems were 68k-based. The REST of the hardware is just too different."
That would seem to include EVERYTHING, not just sound hardware.
Or does "the rest of the hardware" to you mean "some subset of the non-CPU hardware"?
I was never speaking of minor peripherals. I was speaking of the hardware that interfaces the CPU to said peripherals. Or as you phrased it, "The way a program or OS or processer interacts with that hardware specifically."
I also said
"The "Classic" apps were written for an entirely different system architecture."
Which sent you into some insanity about filesystems that has nothing to do with anything.
And in fact would be NO ISSUE WHATSOEVER were it possible to actually run Mac code on the Wii. Drive format is PURELY at the software level and the Wii has no native hard drive support.
Had you looked up system architecture, or even just admitted you didn't know what the phrase meant instead of making wild-ass guesses, we could've spared ourselves this round of idiocy.
Though I'd like to know where you thought Mac drivers for the Wii graphics chip were going to come from.
Dude.
I was wrong. I had no idea what I'm talking about. I admitted it a good bit ago.
I was explaining where my thoughts were coming from in my earlier posts, you're beating a dead horse.
Besides, I was asking. I was asking because I didn't know if it was possible. Go read that again. I'm not saying "DO THIS", I was asking if it was possible, and when you told me the differences, I obviously didn't understand.
Now I do, drop it. The only reason I even included that bit to you in my long-ass post was to explain what I was thinking at the time. >_<;

Hmmm, what I am personally am interested in is the encryption algorithm. We need more people like Andreas Naive around that are skilled in this sort of maths, so then the Wii's encryption algorithm is busted. And then homebrew stuff on the Wii can really lift off...Yeah, thats why I just had theories. I dont have a decrypted copy of firmware to trace to find out if they did or not. I have no way to test my ideas yet, but when I can, I would like to have some ideas to look at or if someone else is looking for ideas to look into exploiting the Wii, a place for people to start looking or experiment with would be a neat find.
Anyway, it would be awesomeif someone used the keyboard to hack the Wii lol, it was just an idea though.
In regards to aluigi's site: That is just AMAZING. I Bow before his greatness....
At least, after that happens, we can really put those ideas into practise to see if they do anything. If nothing happens, so what? Least we learnt something.

As for Luigi's site, I have to agree. He certainly is knowledgeable in this area, plus the work he does in finding bugs in multiplayer computer games is quite honorable IMO. Pity GameSpy gave him so much hell for his research on their system..

I hate to this, but this isn't gaia, and I used to be there too, but the main issue is... this isn't a thread about things you can do with the Wii, its a thread about things you can attack the Wii with.
Also, why wouldn't I be a guy? What problem would it be if I were a girl? AoL has the right idea :-p.
Next time I will use sarcasim tags....- So if I use a faulty driver and get a BSOD, it's microsoft's poor planning?
It depends on whether they made the engine or not.
You are right... but the Wii can't nativly play it so its not a viable attack method... You also said it would be cool to have it on a portable, the psp could easily handle something like that, it may be already done.- I'm talking about all the different data you can include in an MKV. It does subtitles and such, right? Or am I thinking of a different format? At least I know it does multiple audio streams.
I am talking about the IDEA of what you wanted. Which you are wrong, it CAN be done, just not easily and not now. It would be a very difficult project to make that kind of frankenstein emulator.- Too bad that doesn't do what I wanted. :\ Which involves the wii and os7-8 programs, which I now know can't be done.
If you are here to learn as you say you are, then it should have been very helpful to you. It would have helped explain why such an idea is could not be done with the Wii's native architecture. Besides, if you want to learn, then there is no reason not to read it, but if you don't care... well, then don't say you want to learn.- Don't care, have thought of no ways looking that up will help me.
I understand you meant online harassment, I am continuing to press because you still are not getting it. You don't understand how something as simple as mmio or P.L. could have anything to do with your subtopic, not only that, but you are bringing a perfectly good topic with a lot of interesting ideas on a track to being locked.- I wasn't being serious. :\ I was joking at how much I failed, and then you continued to press on me how wrong I was after I already got the point.
You said I was too late to 'whip' you, which implies I should have been there to do so when you were.- I didn't say you did. It doesn't appear you do.
There were plenty of key words for you to look up, you didn't look it up because you were either too lazy, or didn't think something has anything to do with what you want. A small bit of advice, look up EVERYTHING posted that you have no idea what it is or how it relates if you are here to learn. There's a big lack of communication here. If I don't get something, try explaining it better. If you don't have the time, then give me a link and explain what the link is to, or some keywords for me to go look up.

1) sledge hammer
2) throw it out in the middle of the interstate
3) tie some C4 around it then detonate

Hmm an interesting idea occured to me today. The virtual console makes a save state if you go to the wii menu then power off the console... makes you wonder how those save states are stored and if we can throw erroneous information into it to crash it...
... Ever take a look at the Earthbound ROM? I SWEAR THE PROGRAMMERS WERE ON CRACK WHEN THEY DID IT! JUST LOOK AT IT!
Hmm more like backing up the save state to an SD card an altering then putting it back. My SD Card reader is out right now so I can't see if copying the game with a save state and without will yeild a state to edit or if it is seperate. Plus, I don't know if the states are encrypted or not either. But its just an idea...

Yeah, but that'd require the person to have bought that specific game in order to use it, unless the saves aren't encrypted and there's an easy way to make the wii think a save for one game is a save for another.

Well you might be able to crash the emulator by giving it malformed data too. In that case, it would probably be virtual console - console specific crash. Memory and Registers should be the same across an emulated system, just feed it RAM thats too long, it should have an effect on something, or if nintendo is smart, they probably have some sort of state size checker with a crc of some sort. I can't try anything until I get my reader back though. In this case, the requirement would be for someone to buy any virtual console NES game for example. Again... just a theory.

The savestates for VC games are stored right in the save files for the games. If you look at NES games that have no battery RAM, they still have files in the Wii saves organizer. However, these cannot be copied onto SD. Even the games that do have sram, when you copy that file to SD it says something like "Some information could not be copied", which is the savestate part.
