So I'm thinking of building this new pc..

Place to talk about all that new hardware and decaying software you have.

Someone doesn't understand the ZSNES Board yet.

If there's a possibility to insult someone, you go with the insult, regardless of how justified it is.

So it's like barrens chat in World of Warcraft? bunch of immature, dis-respectful children running around? that's fine, I'll just cut down on how much I visit this site then.

you can stop the insults by stopping the stupid

it's not like i always argue or just decided to pick on you. in a few threads in the past few days, i've seen a lot of "not that bright" things coming from you.

immature children would just insult you or talk about your mother. i'm actually rudely critiquing. big difference

Aside from the fact that we're generally more intelligent than the rest of the 'net, yes. Exceptions where noted. Probably immediately after they post.

Not much of one, they have the same impact, and require the same amount of intelligence, it's not being rudely critical, it's being an asshole. You blatantly throw insults at me with moderately intelligent statements following them, criticism doesn't involve direct insults. Even small children have access to dictionary's doesn't make them smart though. I don't see me saying stupid things, I made a mistake and thought a pic link was a real url because it was late at night and I wasn't paying attention. Even the most intelligent people in the world make mistakes every now and then, it's called being human. No one else but you seems to have a problem with me, I think you just decided to stick your nose into something you didn't really care about to try and find an opening such as my mistaken url and start acting like a complete douche, now how's about backin off my threads from now on.

Now as for the actual topic of this thread. I can possibly start college in May so I'm probably just going to end up upgrading this computer with (and yes I checked all the sockets, ram type, etc..) with a Athalon 6400+ 3.2ghz dual core, 2 gigs of ram, and a GeForce 8800 GT 768mb ram.

I haven't seen any reference anywhere of an 8800GT with 768MB of RAM; that's likely a 8800GTX. You may be better off going with a 8800GTS 512MB. (Note that there is an architectural difference between the 640MB GTS and the 512MB GTS; the 512MB variant is the newer and faster model.)

Alternatively, it looks like NVIDIA's new chips will be out by May, so there may be even better alternatives at that time. By that time, there might even be marketable Phenom X3/X4s as well to use instead of an Athlon X2.

I do believe it was the GTX for 768, but I may go with the 512mb version.

I read about the Phenoms that are coming out, I was actually debating on whether to wait on those to release or not. It depends on pricing, has there been any estimates or official pricings?

Edit - I used CPU-Z to double check my socket type and it's AM2 (940) So i've chosen this processor http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications ... No=3509778

This is my current CPU

I avoid TigerDirect like the plague; their customer service sucks.

On this particular CPU, save $50 and get significantly better customer service with NewEgg. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6819103191

yea I should have checked newegg, I've gone to TD for awhile, so it's a habit. Thanks for the link though! :D

What I've decided to do actually, since my younger brothers have never owned their own PC, is to upgrade this one and give it to them.

Nvidia 8500 512mb
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814150245

The AMD Athalon 64 X2 6400+

2 gigs of ram
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820161677

and some extra juice, seeing as the 250w currently in it won't cut it.

This way once I move out about mid this year, they'll have there own gamin PC.

*edit* I went thru NEWEGG.com and made a list of pretty much the same components (found a cheaper mobo though, 650i) for my new computer. here's the list:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814130318
2x Nvidia GeForce 8800 GT 512mb

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820231098
2 sets of DDR2 PC6400 800mhz 2 Gigabyte RAM sticks (2x1024) total of 4 sticks

750watt Power Supply Sata and SLI ready.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6824009131
20" Monitor, 2ms and DVI output.

APEVIA X-CRUISER-BK Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

while we're mixing threads, i just thought i'd add that i will stop when you do. don't post moronic things, like going off for a full paragraph about a "scam site" (one FULL paragragph!) and complaining about a game you don't need to even be playing anymore. say things worth replying to, and i actually will.

BUT, as per your requests, i'll stay out of your two threads now.

ok first off I refuse to buy off a site such as xs123, that just sounds like a scam site, I don't trust it. I'll stick to newegg.com and TD I know they're safe and secure, I won't be putting my CC info into xs123 I mean cmon xs123 for a site name, that's usually what sites that give you trojan's use.
I'm pretty sure I put 2 complex sentences in that, and pretty sure it's 3-4 sentences for a paragraph.

You should stop now because I was trying to post about actual threads and you hopped in here and after your first post starting insulting me, and followed me to my other thread and basically did the same. It's called harassment, especially when I asked you to stop on both threads. I thank you for stopping though. :)

BACK on topic, what do you guys and/or girls think of my New Egg list above?

Oh and @ Whicker

That PSU you want to put into your PC is overkill to the extreme, and will actually cost you a fair bit in electric bills over the period of time it's going to be used.

You see, PSUs with huge wattage ratings tend to not be efficient at lower power draws. Their peak efficiency is somewhere around the 5-600 watt area. Your PC, even with the SLI thrown in, will not draw that amount. Probably 400 or 450 at full load. here's a 500 watt PSU that's damn good: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817151034

it's even cheaper than the one you had select. All around, it's a 100% better choice.

The PSU you selected for your younger brothers' PC is from a crap brand that has been known to blow out in a year or less(Three years max). Here's a low cost but not low quality PSU that will suit their needs just fine:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817104031

Their system won't come close to drawing the max amount of power with the GeForce 8500 in it.

Edit: if you want to play it safe with your PC, here's a 550 watt PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817371002

Your system will not pull that much unless you run Folding@Home, Crysis at absolutely max settings(Crysis doesn't like Multiple GPU configurations too much, though... It slows down on a lot of them for some reason... a patch has come out that is supposed to fix that) and encode video all at that same time, however...

Damn, I really overused the ellipsis there.

Alright, thanks. I'm going with the 500-watt for my pc, and that'll do for my bro's pc.

not trolling.

People willing to pay >$100 for a computer power supply makes me cry. There's no magic going on inside that box, and the only way to make it go horribly wrong is to use poor quality components.

That being said, I wouldn't want to be in the same room as this one:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817182001
MTBF of 100K hours full load my ass.

There are legitimate reasons to buy a 100 dollar power supply.

1. You really do need the higher wattage(Running a triple SLI system, for example).

2. A lot of the models with modular cables cost over 100 bucks.

3. Some of the coolest and or quietest running PSUs cost that much.

Triple SLI has been show to add a decent amount of speed... Not as much as normal SLI does when compared to just one card, but enough to make it useful for some people.

I consider SLI in general to be retarded bullshit.

There's simply NO excuse for having a grand tied up in your video card(s).
Games like Crysis, which can't run at full detail on the most powerful hardware available on either side of their launch, are embarrassments to the industry.
Also note that Crysis doesn't benefit from triple SLI, even though it's the only title that would benefit hugely from it at present.

About the only PC game that's impressed me in recent years is Doom 3. And that's BECAUSE they optimized it to run at a reasonable quality level on a wide variety of hardware. The max settings ran playably on the highest-end hardware available at it's launch, and by most accounts there was very little difference between the next several steps down. So if you were playing on an old GeForce 3, you still got MOST of what you'd see on a maxed GeForce 5.

It's a throwback to the older days, when you made games to run on PCs, not PCs to run games on.

...what? It does a lot for certain games: http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3183&p=3

Look at what it does for Bioshock, for example. When you consider the fact that even at those fairly insane settings, it makes the game completely smooth(Remember, average frame rate of 60 doesn't mean 60 all the time), it certainly shows a reason for its' existance... Especially when you consider the fact that settings beyond 4X AA exist.

FWIW, this is coming from a person who wouldn't bother with SLI type deals... ever. There's no bias towards the platform here.

I never said it didn't show any performance boost in any circumstances. Just that spending that much on your graphics acceleration is completely totally batshit insane, and the fact that there's still gains to be had there is disturbing, to say the least.
