X window system in HD

Post by paulguy »

I got reminded of my issue by seeing that other dude's thread in zsnes talk.

I recently got a 42" HDTV. It can display up to 1080i. I have it connected to my computer through a DVI->HDMI adapter. No matter what I do, I can't seem to get it in to 1080i mode. Left to autodetect what resolution to use, X windows picks 720p. No matter what I do, I can't specify 1080i. I've tried several solutions on the internet from just specifying "1920x1080" to custom ModeLines and no matter what, nothing works and I'll sometimes get stuck in 480p. Another issue is once i start X windows, text mode terminals get screwed up. They display properly at bootup (detected at 1080i, odd) then when X windows starts up, there's junk on the top of the screen, the bottom is cut off and every few lines is cut out. If X windows is in 640x480, the text mode terminal gets completely destroyed. Everything is horribly garbled.

The TV is P41H401x series (not sure the exact model but there's only 3 others) and my video card is an Nvidia Geforce FX 5200.

I think you are stuck with progressive modes. try forcing the refresh rate to 60hz with 1080x1920

720p being better than 1080i anyways....

that tv doesn't have a VGA/DVI input?

720p seems to look like shit and 1080i looks much better even when watching TV. There's these bright lines around everything that I assume is from a shitty scaler so I'd rather display at normal res.

It does not have a DVI or VGA port, just 3 HDMI, 3 composite, 1 svideo and 2 component.

you need a HDCP capable card to do 1080i, and yours ain't it.

huh?

He's not watching a copy protected movie... unless the rules have changed, or some dev misunderstood something.

Hell, I can even get 1920x1080 out of an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro. But I use this unpopular OS called Windows XP, and sometimes this obscure software called Cygwin...

edit: shoot, it was 1920x1080...

an hdcp compliant card is probably more likely to support 1080i over HDMI or DVI.

he's using a 5200, draw your own conclusions.
