AVI's increasing in size?

Post by Sferics »

I am new to DVD authoring and have been trying to put several AVI files onto a DVD using Sonic MyDVD. I am also trying to create a menu so I can select which of the files I want to view when I play it in my DVD player. Each of the files is about 180 MB in size, but when I put them on the DVD project, they balloon to over 400 MB, and now I am unable to put all the files I want to on the DVD.

Does the conversion of an AVI to a DVD-ready format do this, or is there something I am missing? Any help would be appreciated.

DVD-Video is encoded in a specific format, the size of which is wholly dependent on the length of the video. The filesize (and compression formats, etc) of the source will not affect the size of the DVD-encoded output. (In reality, it's slightly more complicated than this, but for most purposes it's close enough.)

This is highly similar to an audio CD - an audio track from an uncompressed WAV file will take no more space on the disc then if the track were created from an MP3 of the same source.
Why yes, my shift key *IS* broken.

So what could I do to make it fit? Decrease the quality? Or would that matter since DVD-Video size is dependent on the length?

I'm using a standard 4.7 GB DVD, and I'd like to stick with that if it's possible.

I am trying to put the first Saga of Dragon Ball on this DVD, and if Funimation could make it fit, why can't I? Or were they using a bigger DVD?

That's easy. You just chop out the more controversial segments.

You can use Tovid to automagically give you the correct bit rate and some pretty good compression settings to get the most onto a dvd at the highest quality possible. MPEG2 is a much less advanced compression format than MPEG4, so yes, the file sizes will balloon.

Doesn't exist. You mean 4.4 GB, despite what it might be labeled.

pretty much everything on dvd is put on a dual layer disc. use dvdfab or dvdshrink (the latter is much older) to srhink (reduce quality) the dvd so that it fits on a standard dvd. on a normal tv it is hard to see the difference.

Reducing quality would help.

It's only loosely based on length. Since obviously, 10 seconds of MPEG2 at a given quality level will be larger than 8 seconds of MPEG2 at the same quality level.

uh 8 seconds of mpeg2 at the same quality as a 2 sec one would = more (same degree of compression)

And your point is? Just because I used 8 and 10 instead of 8 and 2 doesn't mean my example is somehow invalid.

I think he totally didn't fail at substracting 8 from 10, but kinda forgot what he intended to do with that result... not enough RAM ?

I dont even bother with converting downloaded content to dvd anymore. Wal-mart had uber cheap (around $40) DVD players that play divx content. I just burn them to a data dvd and play them from there.
