Opinion of ads on the board

If I were to puts ads on the forums how would you feel about them and where should they be placed? I know you probably use AdBlock anyway but I would like some input before I deface this place.

The only thing I hate about forum ads are when they're stuck in between posts. It really disrupts things. Do it up Something Awful style, with an ad at the top and bottom. Maybe Google adwords?

Text-based ads at the bottom of a page are not in any way objectionable to me. In fact, anything at the bottom of a page is fine as far as I'm concerned. If more is needed, my only beef is with ads that make noise... that's when I break out my hammer.

I wouldn't object to non-intrusive text-based ads (e.g. Google Ads) to help support the site.

(I would class intrusive ads as stuff like pop-ups, picture ads, porn ads, flash ads etc).

Yes, it's bad enough most work places censor the site because it deals with gaming, don't need to make any worse due to pornography ads.

Ads in-between a number of posts or on the bottom, maybe a thin row of ad links on the top of the page can fit. Also I'm with everyone with just text only ads. Oh, with all the changes on the board, would we see a update to phpBB3?

You could cut down the width of the whole forum and maybe put text ads in columns to the left and right of every page.

Or just to the right, preferably.

I wouldn't object to banner ads at the very top and bottom of the page, as long as it doesn't turn out like the main ZSNES site (where every once in a while you get the odd square banner that makes the top area of the page disproportionately heug).

For the love of god, though, please stay far far away from those context-sensitive ads that throw up floating ads when you mouse-over certain words (if my explanation sucks, see any review on AnandTech for examples).

they would go all over the forums, it doesn't matter which board you're reading, they'll be there.

I would have no problem with it, and putting it at the top of the page would probably work best (as the ads would be viewed, but not interfere with the board).

Adsense apparently sucks for any site with anything close to a real userbase.

As long as it's not invasive, fine with it. Site is already proxied-closed off from work during work hours, anyway.

Franpa was talking about what section of the ZBoard this topic was posted. He thought that pagefault was making a joke by posting it in "General Nonsense" instead of "Forum," which is arguably the more appropriate section for this topic.

get the ads that insert themself as a reply, that way anyone who scours these forums can just scroll right past it as if it were a post from demios. nobody looking for help on how to get their zsnes (btw i'm too stupid to learn the name of the emulator) working with r0mz is gonna care about a few ads.
