Since the romhacking.net forum are ruled by facist moderators who are afraid of controversial opinions and opinions that do not follow the status quo (I'm looking at you KaioShin), I'll just make a thread here.
On the internet fanbois are like the schoolyard where each person has their own group. You've got your emos, your goths, your football jocks, the female gold-diggers etc... On the internet this is further diversified: the game nerds category have their own little sub-groups. Unfortunately, the internet being a medium of freedom of speech, they like to make their voices heard. Sure you can ignore them, but they would still annoy you anyhow.
Here are the ones that annoy me:
Category 1: The Pro-Fanbois: Their goal is to spread positive love about a certain game and to encourage everyone to hail it as the pinnacle of gaming and worthy of worship.
~Lunar series fanbois: An average anime RPG that is completely unspecial, apart from the fact that it's very average yet it's worshipped by a few crazy fans.
~Devil May Cry series fanboys: Wannabe tough and cool macho guys.
~Dragon Quest 8 fanboys: Another average game worshipped by a few hypocritical fans. Why hypocritical? Final Fantasy sequels are accused of being all the same. If all the FFs are all the same, then I would hate to hear what they have to say about the Dragon Quest series. Same graphics, same sound effects, same music, same character designs... the list goes on. Somehow Dragon Quest 8 avoids these criticism for being a "charming" game. Bullflap.
~Breath of Fire 3 fanboys: Yet another slow, boring and averaged RPG game worshipped like it's the second coming of Christ.
~Final Fantasy VII Dirge of Cerberus anti-fanboys: I guarantee you this game would not have received so much criticism if it DIDN'T have the words Final Fantasy VII in it.
~Tales of Symphonia/etc fanboys: Boring cliched anime RPG games with just as cliched anime RPG characters and cliched anime RPG stories.
~Shadow of the Collosus fanboys: If I have to hear another "Can video games be considered art" internet debate, I'll have to start killing some people.
~Sega Saturn fanboys: I seriously dont see whats the big deal with the Sega Saturn. Some Sega Saturn gamers would usually boast about their big imported games collection. So I look at their list of 100 Japanese Sega Saturn games and I think to myself: "What, 95% of this list are shit games!" Apart from a few gems, the Sega Saturn library (not just imports) are piss-poor.
~Dreamcast fanboy: The way I see it, the dreamcast is basically a vegetable like Terri Schiavo, being artificially kept "alive" by the occassional new SHMUP release. I think DC owners only love their dreamcasts because it's "cool" to be an owner of a not quite alive/not quite dead console. They should really just stop living in denial and finally let the Dreamcast rest in peace.
~Chrono Trigger fanboys: Obnoxious for several reasons:
1) Chrono Trigger is not a Final Fantasy game. So they think they are cool for not liking a Final Fantasy game.
2) Chrono Trigger fetches high prices on ebay. So simply by owning CT, they are effectively saying 'I AM RICHER THAN YOU, PEASANT'
3) Their relentless hatred of Chrono Cross, the sequel. I don't mind if someone likes or don't like a game, but to have such hatred for a game that is AT WORST, average, can only be explained by their nostalgia glasses.
~SHMUP (Shoot 'em up) genre fans: A genre in which no new possible idea is available to change the gameplay to differ from "move your ship, shoot shit, avoid bullets". This genre should've died long ago. Their constant bragging of their total points achieved on Gigawing (or any other game) is pretty annoying too. Hey, guess what: no-one gives a shit about your score.
Category 2: The Anti-Fanbois: Their goal is to spread hatred and vitriol about a certain game and to encourage everyone that it's not even worth wiping your ass with.
~Chrono Cross/Star Ocean 3/Xenosaga 2/etc anti-fanbois: For letting their nostalgia of the prequels get in the way of their enjoyment of the current titles instead of just enjoying the sequels for what they are: decent sequels.
~Romancing saga series anti-fanboys: Final Fantasy games are accused of being all the same and being too linear. So the Romancing saga games should be the perfect antidote offering open-ended gameplay and story-telling right? Nope. It's hated by FF-haters and even W-RPG (Western RPG) fans. Proof that game developers should never listen to their fanbase. Like women, they don't know what they want.
Category 3: The Pro/Anti-Fanbois (dual roles) Pretty simple, they encourage you to hate one game to love another, or to love one game to hate another.
~The Pro-Final Fantasy 6/Anti-Final Fantasy 7 fanbois In any FF7 discussion, these FF6-fanboys will inevitably show up to spout their usual comments like "FF6 was the peak of the series and went downhill from there" and "You like FF7 because you are a newbie. Real gamers play FF6"
The difference between FF7-fanboys and FF6-fanboys is attitude. FF7-fanboys can be described as immature, naive and easily impressed. FF6-fanboys however are bitter, twisted and cynical. And that makes FF6-fanboys worse because while FF7-fanboys promote their cause by spreading positive comments (FF7 was a good game), FF6-fanboys promote their cause by spewing hatred and negativity(FF7 sucks).
Invariably, comparisons between FF7 and FF6 will boil down to "which has the better villain" where the FF6-fanboys (who should know better) lower themselves down to the FF7-fanboy's level by debating on which fictional character was more evil (Sephiroth vs Kefka).
Further proof that the Pro-FF6/Anti-FF7 fanboys are despicable twats are the fact that active Pro-FF7/Anti-FF6 fanboys are extremely rare.
To make an analogy, FF7-fans are chlldren and FF6-fans are the pedophiles. When the FF6-fans decide to have internet arguments (or have sex with) FF7-fans (or children), it is wrong, whichever side you are on. The difference is that the FF6-fans should know better than to do such a thing (have sex with children).
Are there any gaming sub-cultures that annoy YOU?
Your pet peeves at video game fanbois/anti-fanbois

Uh... Speaking as a long time rhdn member(Basically as soon as the site went out of beta, I signed up), they've had plenty of controversial arguments and threads. Look up Mother 3 on that forum to see quite the controversy, including me insulting the staff a few times(Which is not something I'm proud of, FYI.).Unforgiven wrote:Since the romhacking.net forum are ruled by facist moderators who are afraid of controversial opinions and opinions that do not follow the status quo (I'm looking at you KaioShin), I'll just make a thread here.
Also, XS2 sucks because its' art direction is poor, it's too damn short and its' battle system is fucked. The story was excellent, but felt like XS episode 1 part 2.
