Some of my Favorites

Deus Ex
Chrono Trigger
MDK2
The Space Quest series
Ys: Ark of Napishtim - the plot was utterly predictable, but the atmosphere was nicely done
Wild ARMs 2
Tales of Phantasia (can't vouch for the other games in the series)
Xenogears

Agreed.
And I also suck at quoting borked quotes. {OP note: you're right}

Also awesome, but I personally preferred Silent hill 3, all the Silent Hill references made me smile.
Well yeah, Silent Hill 3 is more or less a sequel to the first game. But yeah, references to other games in the series kick ass.

Personally, I'm torn between Silent Hill 2 and 3 as my favorite game in that series.
whicker: franpa is grammatically correct, and he still gets ripped on?
sweener2001: Grammatically correct this one time? sure. every other time? no. does that give him a right? not really.

Err... what ? It's a great game, but... plot ? Ok, so kidnapping Zelda might not have been that overused back then, but did you actually get a kick out of such a miserable plot ?
It doesn't have the slightest beginning of twist or anything of the sort.
At that time I was 8 years old and YES, i got a kick ;)

But anyway, you are right.. This kick would have been more due to the ATMOSPHERE and not to the PLOT.

kidnaping hm? i always like the game with kidnapping gals:
Super Mario Bros, Double Dragon, Dragon Warrior, Zelda, Ghost 'n Ghouls, Altered Beast, Spirit Avenger (Gameboy) etc....

basicaly kidnaping girls may lead to wide variety of genre, and most occuring sequels (or spin-off)

Unreal is nice, too.
True. Regarding Atmosphere one has to mention Half-Life (1&2)!

..and Diablo II, Starcraft, (maybe C&C1 / RA1) as well.

Okay, I take that back; just the normal battle music drove me crazy. I like the boss battle theme, though.

the normal battle music drove me nuts as well! Seriously, it was so annoying it contributed to me dropping the game half way through.

I haven't seen any mention of Planescape: Torment. WTF is wrong with you guys?

Also, I loved the atmosphere on both Half-Life 1 and 2. On the first one, I really felt I was a semi-defenseless dude surviving its way out the Compound; on the secon, I really felt being chase by corrupted policemen.

You mean like the huge eye inside the glass found on the Ruins of Amnesia's biomechanical lab? That eye was also seen on the intro but it was not part of the story.

I never cared particularly for HL1, but 2 is just excellent game design everywhere, both plot and atmosphere are really great (I suppose there's no need to point that out). I prefer faster gameplay in FPS's though.

Also the original Koudelka, which is apparently in the same continuity.

Pity Sacnoth tore themselves apart over that one.

(Guy that founded Sacnoth was an ex-Squaresoft guy. He left so he could to make genuinely new stuff instead of generic FF knockoffs.
Then the guys that left with him went japanese and decided that making generic FF knockoffs wasn't that bad an idea.

So there was a big pile of headbutting over what the game should be like, and it's a bit of a mixed bag.

The founder quit out of frustration after one game, and then everyone else did Shadow Hearts.)
