[Problem] Kirby Superstar Slowdown?
When playing Kirby Superstar on the ZSNES emulator, I get a bit of a slowdown at times - specifically when there's a lot of sprites on the screen. This occurs mostly when I have a partner and am fighting, am using fire/ice and attacking with it, or am moving fast (warpstar through a stage). The game simply slows down. The FPS is a constant 60, and vsync on or off changes nothing.
It's not a frameskip issue, setting max frameskip to 0 changes nothing. I play with filters on, but even if I turn them off, the problem persists. This occurs on any resolution I play on (including the default).
My question is: does this normally happen in the game, or is there something wrong? It doesn't seem to happen in the other game I own (Donkey Kong Country 2).
Sorry for triple post, if I could attach files I would, and they don't all fit in one post...

Re: [Problem] Kirby Superstar Slowdown?
Sounds like it happens on the real cart. What do you expect with many sprites on the screen?Crevox wrote:When playing Kirby Superstar on the ZSNES emulator, I get a bit of a slowdown at times - specifically when there's a lot of sprites on the screen. This occurs mostly when I have a partner and am fighting, am using fire/ice and attacking with it, or am moving fast (warpstar through a stage). The game simply slows down. The FPS is a constant 60, and vsync on or off changes nothing.

Well, sprite flickering would also be possible.snkcube wrote:What do you expect with many sprites on the screen?

KDL3 is the second-most taxing game for zsnes.
Slowdowns are common, specifically when there are lots of sprites onscreen.
DKC2 is leagues under it in terms of strain.

I would think there would be slow down, it's understandable... but it just seemed odd because if there's only me and my partner, and I use the standard ice attack, I experience slowdown. There aren't that many sprites on the screen, and it happens even if I'm walking toward an area with enemies (they're not on the screen yet). I can't remember if it was actually like that, but I guess it is.
Thanks for the support.

Amazing mirror is pretty nice. Not much slowdown either, although I didn't play with the 3 other peeps all the time.

I don't remember any of the DKC games having any slowdown, ever. Constant 60 fps (which is more than can be said for most modern games), despite being some of the most impressive looking games on the system.

But they weren't really as fancy as they looked.blackmyst wrote:I don't remember any of the DKC games having any slowdown, ever. Constant 60 fps (which is more than can be said for most modern games), despite being some of the most impressive looking games on the system.
Remember, it was all smoke and mirrors. A sprite is a sprite is a sprite.

Slowdown on the SNES doesn't have much to do with the fps count. The game "engine" may run slow though.blackmyst wrote:I don't remember any of the DKC games having any slowdown, ever. I'm the last person you want to tell how raster images work, trust me. :p I'm talking more about the fact that the sprites are fairly large compared to most SNES games and have a high number of animation frames to boot, though I don't know if the latter makes any difference. When you've got two monkeys and you're riding an animal, that's three large sprites for the player alone (I guess that may explain why they went with just a transformation into the one animal in DKC3). Yet they didn't skimp on the on-screen number of enemies or objects. All this with absolutely no special chips (what was Kirby's chip used for? Compression?), and I find fairly impressive that they managed such a smooth gaming experience.
Oh and, when I said 60fps, of course I meant the console's speed, not what's displayed if you were to play the games on an emulator.

SNES sprites aren't large, period. Everything's split in tiny pieces of a couple different sizes, you just fill the ram to the brim or not.
DKC was brilliantly designed, as in it looks gorgeous but is actually simple. If you look at it a while you'll realise not much moves/changes, and most of the changes are very simple (hdma gradients, scrolling transparent layers, all sorts of things that merely require a couple dozen bytes written to regs to handle). The biggest work probably comes from loading the various tiles from ROM, probably dealt with DMA and smart data alignment.
KDL3 needs the SA1 to get way more oomph than what the base CPU could spit, just because it has a damn lot of stuff to change per frame in both position and data. The game is also extremely complicated compared to DKC in terms of interaction and possibilities, probably doesn't help.
Maybe the underlying code is worse as well, i.e. complex AI, but no idea about that really.
Same thing for jikkyou oshaberi parodius. Several tiny things animated independently of each other, using complex AI, with so many things to move around per frame.

However, for me, DKC2's Glimmer's Galleon still takes the cake in terms of what is going on, even if it is merely HDMA, windowing, transparency, and multiple background layers.grinvader wrote:SNES sprites aren't large, period. Kirby Super Star Ultra [Hoshi no Kirby Ultra Super Deluxe], is being released on the DS. This is a remake of Kirby Super Star, with superior graphics.whicker wrote: but no, I can remember Kirby Super Star being pretty horrible with slowdowns. 2 player was still fun though. I wish somebody would take the assets of the game and remake it for another system, sans slowdown.
Release dates are as followed:
North America: Sept 29, 2008
UK: Unknown
Japan: Dec 31, 2008
I'm going to get it, not sure about you. Even if it's a remake.
Want to learn more? Google the title of the game, in the top of this post.
