Can't install new hard drive
I just bought a SATA II hard drive (a Seagate) from newegg.com along with all the necessary cables. I'm trying to hook it up to a spare PC with a P4M80-M4 motherboard. It wouldn't even detect the hard drive in the BIOS until I did a BIOS flash. Now I'm trying to install Windows 2000, but I get one of those nasty "stop errors" before it gets to the disk formatting screen. I've checked the jumper settings, I tried boot disks with the motherboard drivers, and I'm just about out of ideas as to how to get this to work.
This is the motherboard I'm using.

If your SATA controller doesn't have a PATA emulation option, that will very problematic, especially since Win2k doesn't support SATA natively, nor via a service pack (the last added thing to Win2k was 48-bit LBA support with some of the last few Ultra DMA modes for PATA... not SATA).

The error code is 0x0000007B (0F2463848, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000) INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE. And the jumper is set for 1.5, unless it's not pushed in far enough.
According to the manufacturer's website, making a bootup disk and pressing F6 at installation should allow Windows 2000 to detect the hard drive. But it hasn't worked for me. http://www.biostar-usa.com/knowledgespe ... aqid=99973

What odditude suggests is raping the keyboard until the menu comes up (the same kind of thing you do for accessing a BIOS or F8 before Windows loads up for a special menu).odditude wrote:if it hasn't prompted you for the driver during phase I of the install, you didn't hit F6 at the right time. there's a short (~1 sec) window at the very beginning of setup during which time you need to press F6. the F6 prompt will be in the gray status bar.
Same concept applies here. It is a relatively short window, so you need to be quick!

No, I did press F6 at the right time. But the drivers that I selected did not work. However, that was before I flash updated the BIOS. Unfortunately, my new floppy drive fried this morning when I tried to format the disk. Now I only have one more drive and I'm afraid to try anything else with it. These things seem to love dying... how odd that so few PCs have a floppy drive when they are so essential to have.

Chances are, you may want to revert BIOSes and/or use older/newer drivers...Annihilated wrote:No, I did press F6 at the right time. But the drivers that I selected did not work. However, that was before I flash updated the BIOS.
Are you sure you plugged it in correctly?Unfortunately, my new floppy drive fried this morning when I tried to format the disk. Well the thing is I didn't get a chance to use the drivers again because I had to erase them to make room for the BIOS update. When I tried to copy the files again, the floppy drive stopped reading disks. It may work trying the drivers post-update, but I'm not counting on it... plus these old floppy drives are really fickle.Deathlike2 wrote: Chances are, you may want to revert BIOSes and/or use older/newer drivers...
I've plugged and unplugged it several times into both computers, because they have to share. So I had to go and borrow another one, and it does work. I bought this drive only last year to replace another one that died.Are you sure you plugged it in correctly?

I'd recommend buying a few drives, so you don't have to swap back and forth.Annihilated wrote:I've plugged and unplugged it several times into both computers, because they have to share. I mean, you can get them for 4 bucks.
not sure if 2K will let you load drivers off of a USB drive.

I don't even think XP had that option.Gil_Hamilton wrote:not sure if 2K will let you load drivers off of a USB drive.Annihilated wrote:I've plugged and unplugged it several times into both computers, because they have to share. As long as the BIOS properly recognizes a USB floppy, XP setup will use it. 2000 setup is likely the same, but I don't know for certain.snkcube wrote:I don't even think XP had that option.Gil_Hamilton wrote:not sure if 2K will let you load drivers off of a USB drive.Annihilated wrote:I've plugged and unplugged it several times into both computers, because they have to share. Annihilated - exactly what driver(s) were listed, and which one(s) did you choose from the list?Deathlike2 wrote: Chances are, you may want to revert BIOSes and/or use older/newer drivers...
Why yes, my shift key *IS* broken.

The drivers on the disk were both for RAID configurations and ATA/ATAPI Host Controllers for different operating systems, including Windows 2000, XP, 2003, and 98-ME. I tried most of them except 98-ME. I'm pretty sure that neither of these apply to me since the SATA is plugged onboard, not onto a host adapter. But the motherboard website said that was how to install Windows 2000 on a SATA hard drive.
I took out the hard drive and plugged it into an XP machine, and formatted it with NTFS. I suppose that if the drive was faulty, this wouldn't have been possible. So I'm left to conclude that there is no way to install Windows 2000 natively onto this drive, and I need to get Windows XP instead. But I won't know for sure until I buy it. And if it still doesn't work, I don't know what I'll do.
Also, floppy drives are $4? The cheapest one I ever bought was for $14 on ebay.

Can you give me an exact list? (type out the list character for character, please - no abbreviations or interpretations)Annihilated wrote:The drivers on the disk were both for RAID configurations and ATA/ATAPI Host Controllers for different operating systems, including Windows 2000, XP, 2003, and 98-ME. Your interpretation is incorrect.Annihilated wrote:I'm pretty sure that neither of these apply to me since the SATA is plugged onboard, not onto a host adapter.
Also, what version of 2k are you installing? Gold, sp1, sp2, sp3, or sp4?
Yes. I used to have to slipstream SP3 for customers with 2k so the system drive could have a single >128GB partition without using repartitioning tools after the SP install.funkyass wrote:Can you make slipstream versions of 2k, or was that just XP and later?

then he can slipstream the drivers in question into a new 2k cd. much better solution.odditude wrote:Yes. This is from the TXTSETUP.OEM file on the disk.
I am installing Win2k Pro SP1. Also, it won't recognize partitions greater than 128 GB?
I suppose I can try installing it on the other machine, but I thought you had to boot from the CD to do that. And won't it have the wrong hardware configuration when I carry it over to my PC?
Code: Select all
VIARAID_MULTIPLE_2003IA32 = "VIA RAID Controller(Windows 2003 IA32)"
VIARAID_MULTIPLE_XP = "VIA RAID Controller(Windows XP)"
VIARAID_MULTIPLE_2K = "VIA RAID Controller(Windows 2000)"
VIARAID_MULTIPLE_NT = "VIA RAID Controller(Windows NT4)"
VIARAID_MULTIPLE_2003K864 = "VIA RAID Controller(Windows 2003 AMDx86-64)"
VIAPDSK_VT4149_2003IA32 = "VIA ATA/ATAPI Host Controller(Windows 2003IA32)"
VIAPDSK_VT4149_XP = "VIA ATA/ATAPI Host Controller(Windows XP)"
VIAPDSK_VT4149_2K = "VIA ATA/ATAPI Host Controller(Windows 2000)"
VIAPDSK_VT4149_NT = "VIA ATA/ATAPI Host Controller(Windows NT4)"

If RAID mode is an option in the BIOS, make sure it's disabled. The driver you need to select is "VIA ATA/ATAPI Host Controller(Windows 2000)."Annihilated wrote:This is from the TXTSETUP.OEM file on the disk.Code: Select all

Correct. To get around this, make yourself a new install disc with SP4 slipstreamed in. You'll need your existing disc, the SP4 installer, IsoBuster, a decent burning utility, and a little patience. Directions are here. (Even though the article specifies XP SP2, the directions will work for 2k the same way.)Annihilated wrote:I am installing Win2k Pro SP1. Bad idea. You'd have severe issues unless that other machine used the same storage controller, which would negate your reason for doing this in the first place.Annihilated wrote:I suppose I can try installing it on the other machine...

Okay, I'm in the process of making a new Windows 2000 SP4 CD, if for no other reason than that installing the SP4 is always a tremendous hassle. But as I've said, I did try the VIA ATA/ATAPI Host Controller(Windows 2000) already, and I still got that stop error. I checked the BIOS and the SATA is not in RAID mode. It's set for IDE compatibility. But I will see what happens once I have slipstreamed SP4 successfully. If it works, I might even just buy Windows XP, since 2000 is too outdated. My only reservation was that Windows XP might have the same problem.
***UPDATE***
Well, the process was a failure. I put the new and improved Windows 2000 CD onto the new computer, and I must have done something wrong, because it said "NTLDR not found." I managed to get around this with a boot 'n swap with the original, so I got up to the point where I had to load the Windows 2000 ATAPI drivers. I got the same stop error as always.
