Google Chrome
Today, Google released a beta of their new Internet browser, Chrome. It's fairly lightweight (only 474kb), has a different tabbing system and much more.
Edit - I was wrong about the installer. The installer itself is 474kb, but the browser itself is around 45 to 46MB after the installer downloads it for you. Other than that, the browser is very sleek and simple. It's very fast, which I like a lot. So far, it's damn good for a beta.

Yeah, but IE7 looks like a Firefox fork too.Deathlike2 wrote:I'm actually more weary of typing stuff into Google's search engine now...
This looks very much like a Mozilla/Firefox fork.
Everyone's stealing Firefox's look and feel, because it's the cool thing to do.
At least Google doesn't have the separate search box.
Though I somehow suspect there's no way to use a search engine other than Google for address-bar searching...

You can remove that box in Firefox as I've said before.Gil_Hamilton wrote:Yeah, but IE7 looks like a Firefox fork too.Deathlike2 wrote:I'm actually more weary of typing stuff into Google's search engine now...

The PR comic is interesting, but the jury is out for it being legitimately good.snkcube wrote:If you really want to go in-depth with Chrome, read their comic.

Some interesting ideas there.
Though is browser stability really a big problem? It's the very first thing they mention, but I can't remember the last time my browser's crashed. And I run fucking nightly builds(because I'm an idiot, that's why).
It makes me wonder what's going on with MS and Mozilla Foundation.

I'd say it's true for Firefox.. even in their newest version... though Flash is the primary culprit. I can't vouch for IE.. I remember IE5 sucking a lot when too many windows were opened... but that shouldn't be surprising.Gil_Hamilton wrote:*does so out of boredom*snkcube wrote:If you really want to go in-depth with Chrome, read their comic.

I do like their idea to isolate pages/components so the whole damn browser doesn't implode.

Oh yeah... now I remember... Acrobat reader used to be bad about taking out Seamonkey.Deathlike2 wrote:I'd say it's true for Firefox.. even in their newest version... though Flash is the primary culprit. I can't vouch for IE.. The current version of the plugin is a lot more stable.
Yeah. That's supremely awesome.I do like their idea to isolate pages/components so the whole damn browser doesn't implode.
Though I expect Apple to pressure them over the "Sad Tab" picture. It's remarkably similar to the Sad Mac and Sad iPod.

I might just switch for this purpose alone. There's something to be said about good memory management.. but even better having some power over it.Gil_Hamilton wrote:Yeah. That's supremely awesome.I do like their idea to isolate pages/components so the whole damn browser doesn't implode.
Bah, it's not available for 2K.

XP version doesn't work? I've seen a lot of stuff that SAYS it requires XP, but runs jsut fine on 2K. Or even 98.Deathlike2 wrote:I might just switch for this purpose alone. The only thing stopping me from using IE8 is that they STILL haven't fixed the issue where you can't use a new tab immediately after creating it. If you enter a search query quickly after creating a new tab, it opens in the previous tab. This is present in IE7 too but I would never use IE7 even if it didn't have this issue because the GUI is just horrible.

There is no download link.. the page is probably constructed with the OS checks in mind.Gil_Hamilton wrote:XP version doesn't work? I think you can get around that with useragent spoofing. But it becomes a lot of hassle for something that MIGHT work.

My current useragent. Italics added around the interesting part.
"equivalent to Firefox/3.0" is added by me to make it work on sites that do browser sniffing and block anything that isn't IE/Firefux/Opera or Safari.

I got over 70 in CHROME for the Acid 3 test, can't be 100% sure of the score though since there server seems to be having trouble and could be stopping the test from fully loading.

And? Everyone already KNEW WebKit was good at the Acid tests.franpa wrote:I got over 70 in CHROME for the Acid 3 test, can't be 100% sure of the score though since there server seems to be having trouble and could be stopping the test from fully loading.

Hell, the latest nightlies of WebKit get a 100% on Acid3, so all that tells us is that Chrome is outdated already.
