I thought it was four, with people hassling him for a fifth?Gil_Hamilton wrote:If I recall, byuu implemented a bajillion sound drivers because everyone was coming back saying "My Linux build doesn't work right with OSS/SDL/ALSA/WTF and bsnes"

Bajillion, 4, same difference. One's just a made-up number while the other's real.King Of Chaos wrote:I thought it was four, with people hassling him for a fifth?Gil_Hamilton wrote:If I recall, byuu implemented a bajillion sound drivers because everyone was coming back saying "My Linux build doesn't work right with OSS/SDL/ALSA/WTF and bsnes"
And WTF continued the pattern better than PulseAudio, or I'd've listed all 4 REAL drivers.

Maybe we could just tell those people who complain "Get a Virtual OS emulator to run the Windows build on Linux; Byuu has a lot stress as it is!" Four drivers is enough...how many drivers do these people want!?King Of Chaos wrote:I thought it was four, with people hassling him for a fifth?Gil_Hamilton wrote:If I recall, byuu implemented a bajillion sound drivers because everyone was coming back saying "My Linux build doesn't work right with OSS/SDL/ALSA/WTF and bsnes"

The problem is there's not a single "right" way to do Linux audio. And every distro has it's own pet project.neo_bahamut1985 wrote:Maybe we could just tell those people who complain "Get a Virtual OS emulator to run the Windows build on Linux; Byuu has a lot stress as it is!" Hi,
I've uploaded a new beta 4 of Regen which contains somewhat major sound emulation updates. I've added an option to boost PSG volume to whatever the user like since I remeber something else, someone else says something else and recordings sound something else. As such, I've been unable to find a way that fits for everyone.
Apart from that, hopefully all the reported sound problems might have been fixed in this release. So don't forget to test them out.
SSG-EG part of my YM2612 core has undergone a major overhaul. So it should be pretty much very close to the real thing now. If you want to check out yourself, here is a recording from the real thing and here is the test ROM to run in Regen and compare results. All credits for these both go out to Nemesis.
And I almost forgot, you can download the beta from here.
And my thanks goes out to a Russian guy for reporting many sound problems but wants to remain anonymous.
stay safe,
AamirM

Thanks a lot for your hard work, AamirM!
I'll be testing it in detail very soon. I played Mortal Kombat 2 a bit, and Regen sounds a bit different from Kega there, though I'm not sure which one is correct because it's been a long while since I played MK2 on a real thing
Gosh, I really wish my Sega Megadrive were still alive so I could test it on a real thing... Anyway, what *is* different is the pitch (and the speed) of the voice, e.g. when Shao Kahn says "Fight!!" or "Outstanding!" or "Finish him!", in Regen it sounds a bit more high-pitched and a bit faster than in Kega, though then again, Regen may be right and Kega may be wrong, I simply can't remember such slight details and I can't remember what it sounded like on the real thing...
Anyway, feel free to disregard or look into it if you think it's worth looking into.
No more things to report for now, the SSG-EG part does sound great btw!
Thanks again, I'll keep you posted on any strange things I encounter.

The Sonic 1 Spring Yard Zone bumper sound pop is back too. Will check Sonic 3K too in a bit.

Thanks, though keep in mind that it just caught my attention as being different, right now I have no idea which one is correct - actually, Regen may be playing it back correctly (or not), I don't have a SMD anymore so I can't check it out for sure on a real thingAamirM wrote:Hi,
This is the second time someone has reported this MKII problem so I'll be looking into that.

Yeah, I think eventually it'll gain Sega CD and 32X support, since Aamir has mentioned he has made changes that will make it easier to add support for more consoles in the future.

With Autofix Checksum on, Lightening Force (U) [c][!] doesn't run.
I imagine that this could apply to more games. Doesn't the [c] tag indicate that the checksum is already correct? If not, Regen isn't "Autofix[ing]" it very well.
Suggestion: Power Off should change video to the grey screen that Regen shows at initialization. Otherwise the Power Off state is easily confused with Pause.
Power Off does return Regen to its initial state, no?
The sequence of actions Pause > Power Off > Load Rom runs the game with no sound and with Pause checked. Clicking Pause completely haults the game, and clicking again toggles the checkmark to off and the game runs normally with sound.

The [c] means "faulty checksum routines," i.e. the checksum is incorrect because the game's developers set it that way, as opposed to a bad dump. (The relevant GoodTools documentation can be found here.)
A related feature request: Could we consider maintaining a database of ROMs which require specific Autofix Checksum settings (for inclusion with a future version of Regen)?

Rocket Knight Adventures doesn't sound crystal clear like it does in Kega. Listen to the Konami screen and the title screen sounds.
Hear all the cracklies. Hairy, even.
Is this "more accurate" than Kega, or just not quite there yet?
Why doesn't the documentation contain exact values by which the true level of PSG can be found? (It sounds fine to me how it is, but for accuracy's sake...)

I wonder if the things we hear is because of the 48000Mz rate Regen uses for SuperHQ mode over the 44100Mz rate Kega uses.
