Custom resolution DirectX errors - Vista64

Post by Dr_Spankenstein »

Hello there,

This probably isn't a fault of ZSNES but something screwy going on in DirectX.

I can add a custom resolution (602x446) in both RivaTuner or via the Nvidia Control Panel, but neither of them show up in my Windows settings and will not work in ZSNES without displaying a DirectX7 Error message telling me that this video mode is probably unupported by my graphics card.

The thing is, I know it is supported as I have tested the newly created resolution and it works in OpenGL and resizes the screen correctly for Windows when tested in the Nvidia control panel?

So why does it not get displayed or work in DirectX and therefore ZSNES?

Is there anyone out there who knows why this could be happening?

Here is my current graphics setup:

Graphics Card: Nvidia GTX 280
Drivers: 178.13 WHQL
OS: Vista 64 Bit
Software: RivaTuner
Monitor: Samsung SynMaster 2493HM

Latest SDK (August 08) and runtimes all installed for DirectX.

Thanks

IIRC, it has to be listed by your monitor as well. Resolutions are always two-fold.. the video card and the monitor. If it's not a selectable Windows resolution, it's not an option.

That is taken as given...

However, my monitor can display them correctly as is shown when I click on Test and everything displays correctly in the NVIDIA Control Panel.

OpenGL recognises it as a resolution but DirectX doesn't, therein lies the problem?!

The next best thing you could do is live with a Windowed mode with a custom resolution set in ZSNES, since that doesn't have said restrictions, and it can be managed well close enough to be fullscreen (assuming your desktop is currently set to the same resolution).

Those custom resolutions for your video card are not good enough... they have to be built into the video card's INF file IIRC.

Thanks very much for your help. Living with a windows mode will certainly suffice!
