Keep 4:3 ratio on Linux

Post by arromdee »

Running 1.51 on Linux.

I have a 1280x1024 LCD monitor. I also have Keep4_3Ratio=1 in my zsnesl.cfg file.

When I set a custom video mode to 1280x1024, it gives me that, however the screen is stretched to cover the entire 1280x1024 display. A 1280x1024 screen is not in 4:3 ratio, so I would expect to see thin black bars at the top and bottom.

Also, is 8:7 or 4:3 (or 5:4, as on a 1280x1024 screen) closest to a real SNES? (What exactly is a real SNES's aspect ratio?)

8:7 (256x224) would be the (NTSC) internal aspect ratio, but it was meant to be seen on a 4:3 TV.
(I suppose PAL would be 16:15)

PAL is also 4:3. The problem is that it has more lines, so black bars have to be added to NTSC material to get the same visible proportions. (afaik)

It weas meant to be seen on a 4:3 TV, but does it stretch it to 4:3, making the pixels not square, or does it enlarge it, keeping the pixels square but cropping the top and bottom? Or a combination?

To simplify, the base 256x224 is stretched to the 4:3 screen.

I managed to get black bars this time, so it seems okay. I'm not sure what I did wrong the first time, though I have some ideas and if so it shouldn't matter.
