Tales of Phantasia Localization (Church)
I was just wondering if those churches were actually Christian, and if the priests actually recited Christian prayers, or if that was just added to localize it more for your typical English speaker? I mean... There are crosses and nuns... But there are also Goddesses!
I know its silly, but this question has always been bothering me.

The crosses were removed not because of religious stuff, but because the Red Cross organization doesn't like it when people use their symbol incorrectly, especially in games.
Most of the religious stuff in EB was just vague-ified, so that things like "goddess" became "priestess", "word of God" becomes "the real truth", etc.
I have more details over here: http://tomato.fobby.net/m2eb/happyhappy.php

Take into account that kids these days never saw any of these so called "90s" and have a hard time imagining stuff that predates even those.

even still, some games were censored
I bet ToP would've been censored heavily

<Nach> so why don't the two of you get your own room and leave us alone with this stupidity of yours?

As if the GBA port of Phantasia wasn't bad enough (sluggish framerates, crappy character names, I mean "Cress"? WTC? Heck, they mistranslated the "Ragnarok" as "Kangaroo")adventure_of_link wrote:even still, some games were censored

That's hardly censorship.
Mini-rant coming.
Video games were SEEN as kiddy in most occidental countries up to... let's say, roughly 1994. Then they got 3D and even the tight asses couldn't find any excuses not to play.
Only then gaming became 'cool' and everyone got a fucking playstation or saturn and were playing TEKKEN or TOSHINDEN and the rest of the whee 3D fighting/flying/soccer games. Because the other games were still uncool and nerdy, text in games lol.
Before that games were mostly 2D and even the best attempts only got a slighty larger audience in. For cool kids, video games were for nerds and geeks and kiddos and retards, totally uncool and mostly unworthy of even speaking about (pixels lol) despite the best attempts from commercials.
So yes, for the big whole of the SNES' life, Japan was the only place were gaming was something serious. Even Nintendo of America/Europe didn't try hard to make things change. And they distributed games that would fit the target audience - kids to (gasp) low teens.
So when something like ToP got out... first, the technical difficulties. You could ask Dark Force about it, but it wasn't exactly the easiest translation to make, I bet.
Fat game (expensive chips), fat script (will it fit ? anyone good enough to pull it on a deadline ?), lots of not happy-childish things (oh cool, wait, you just got a sword back from the corpse of your first teammate's mother ? and wait, is that sexual innuendo over there ? lord, did she just kiss him ?)
So, lots of stuff to do to change all that to fit a kiddy audience. Huge investment. End of the SNES' life. Low interest from NOA/E. Dropped.
They dropped SD3, ffs. And it had -nothing- like that. They gave up at the technical difficulties, probably (wait, how many fonts will we have to do ? and what do you mean by "not enough space with a fixed width font" ? We pulled it fine with the previous episode ! Where the fuck is woolsey when we need him ? fuck this shit, we're not wasting a cent more on this...)
