Whats a good AV for Vista??

Post by AamirM »

Hi,

So yeah, I've decided to give Vista another shot (read: chance). My first experiences with it weren't good at all.

Anyways, I wanted to know if there is a good antivirus for vista available. I don't have any AV installed on Vista and I use Symantec AV on XP (its like 3-4 years old) which has never let me down and is damn fast. But it wouldn't install on Vista :x . So is there any thing like that which I can use on Vista. Performance is a big priority as I don't have a very fast system.

AVG is already ruled out this means. Something that requires me to restart the system on every update can fuck off. I heard it also deletes some important Windows files.

And lastly, I am not necessarily looking for a "free" AV :) .

EDIT:
It shouldn't open thousands of windows when I start the PC.

stay safe,

I've used NOD32 and it seems to work well. Fast, light, doesn't restart for updates and updates very often. It does have a splash screen when you start up but you might be able to disable it.

I've also heard good things about Avast!, Antivir and Kaspersky but I have limited experience with them.

Trend Micro PC Cillin (current versions are known as Internet Security) has never failed me since the 2006 edition. The 2006 edition failed some times but was ok, when it failed it was caused by "user error" IE: I opened something that I knew was a virus but that was due to a lapse in understanding what I was currently doing.

2007 had a goofy childish approach to the GUI and also, it has never failed me.

2008 (currently using 2008) has a excellent GUI and is fairly easy to use, it does not use much RAM unless it is scanning something and is pretty fast on multi-core systems. 2008 has also not failed me so far, and I believe we are soon getting a free upgrade to the 2009 edition too. (in 3 weeks~)

on a C2D E6600-based machine with 2GB, avast! has no discernible performance impact and uses ~22MB of RAM. i'm quite satisfied with it.

Last time I used anti-vir in Vista, it wouldn't work at all.

it's almost been a couple years since Vista's been out, so who knows it might work these days.

Why don't you give Windows Server 2008 a shot instead?.

He is after a virus scanner to use to stop viruses and you recommend a beta O/S? (every O/S by MS is considered public beta until Service pack 1 IMHO)

That's very helpful of you. Thank you for that insightful and relevant remark.

I consider ALL Linux builds to be public betas. So nyah!

And there's nothing H about your IMO.

Avast! works extremely well in Vista, and is free for personal use. Avast tends to be far less memory/CPU intensive than Symantec, and has slightly better performance than AVG. It tends to rate reliably high in the VB 100 ratings. Manual virus scans can be a bit slow, but most people tend to rely on the automated service anyway. You need to "renew" your license once per year, but it's free to do so. There is a "professional" version that includes a script blocker for IE.

Since you mentioned restarts in AVG as a gripe, Avast is much better about that. It automatically downloads virus signature updates without the need for a reboot, but any program updates need to be manually authorized and WILL require a reboot. Incremental signature updates are put out roughly every two days, but the program will automatically download new signatures once per week. If the program is updated (roughly every 3-4 months), you'll get a visual notice, and need to click on that or force a software update.

Very interesting, I will give it a shot for sure later. Thanks for it.

As for AV, I am looking at this Avira right now. I have heard good things about it so I'll be trying it. Thanks all for your suggestions.

I'll throw in my 2 cents and say that I also recommend AntiVir. If there is ever any problem just email them and you'll get a response soon. I once suspected a false virus detection so I emailed them. Within just a few hours they responded telling me I was correct and released an update.

Yeah, I installed it today and its working great so far. Didn't even had to restart PC after the install which many AV require and not to mention its quite fast.

Will be installing SP1 today as well and will get Windows Server 2008 in 2-3 days to try out.

EDIT:
Thank God I didn't install AVG. Read about its massive failure here.

the free version of avira doesn't scan email, and likes to throw nag screens at you.

indeed, i also experience some of its failures.

one stupid thing about false positve, when it strikes the system files.
yet, avg's .vxd will lock and prevent any access to said files, if user haven't delete or move it to quarantine already...

If it becomes a problem, I'll try the paid version. But right now I am more than happy with it.

It's not so bad though. The nag screen is only once a day.

Fixed.

also, been a happy user of avira anti-vir for over three years running.

You should have installed SP1 first thing o_o the update process isn't fully compatible with some drivers, so some devices may need to be reinstalled after the update is complete. Oh and there is no "Configuring Updates - Stage 2 of 3"... I only ever see Stage 3 of 3 and Stage 1 of 3 in that order o_o

Here, there is stage 1, then 2, then reboot, then 3, then log in.
