How to make Vista sleep forever?

Post by franpa »

Hello, when I put Vista to sleep, it will eventually wake up without any appropriate input happening, I tested it to make sure it only wakes up on a mouse click or keyboard button and not from mouse movement.

Is there a variable such as HDD activity or something that will force it out of Sleep?

Heh. I saw the title and instantly thought you were looking at ways of killing it forever.

Good luck on that. I cant get mine to sleep or hibernate, results in blue-screen and reboot. I dont even want to go into detail about IE.

yep. in device manager, you can set whether each device is capable of waking the computer (via the individual property sheets).
Why yes, my shift key *IS* broken.

Service Pack 1 has a patch that's supposed to fix this.

Nvidia's older drivers are also known to cause sleep problems in Vista.

If that doesn't work, your motherboard may not support the ACPI commands that Windows is trying to use. You need to have support for S3 or S4 in order for the sleep modes in Vista to work. Run the command "powerconfig /a" from an administrator command prompt to find out if you support them.

I made Vista sleep permanently on my machine, by completely removing the piece of shit (tried out a pirated version on my machine for about 2 weeks, and came to the realization that I hate it).

Actually no, I didn't put it to sleep. I shot it in the head with lots of 0's.

Make sure the Wake on LAN option is disabled for your NIC drivers and/or BIOS. Some BIOSes have a lot of power management options especially if it is built into the mobo.. sometimes the Wake on LAN feature is there too.

You can also use good old fashioned hibernate mode. Open the Control Panel, Power Options, Change plan settings, Change advanced power settings, Sleep, Allow hybrid sleep, Off. Now sleep should be split into conventional sleep mode and hibernate.

Ok, I went through Device manager and Disabled all "Allow this device to wake computer" options except for the Keyboard. My motherboard supports S1 and S3 modes, had to use "powercfg /a".

The network device is set to not turn off, but is also set to not be able to wake the computer... I've also checked my BIOS and made sure all such waking options there are disabled too.

Since I just turned off the Mouse as a device that can wake the computer, I will get back to you on if it fixes the issue.

At the command prompt, type "powercfg lastwake". That will list the device that last caused your system to wake up from sleep.

Also, if you're tired of going through the list of devices to see which can wake your system, type "powercfg -devicequery wake_armed" to see a list of anything with that option enabled.

FYI - S3 is deep sleep, while S4 is hibernate. If your system doesn't support S4, you may want to make sure hibernation is disabled, and delete your hibernation state files using the disk cleanup utility.

My observations:

Sleep (S3) = The computer enters a low power saving mode where the computer case fans and stuff turn OFF making the computer case dead silent. the case LEDs flash also, but i do not know if they flash the whole time the computer sleeps.

When I get back to the computer the LEDs will be static, not flashing and all case fans will be running, only the monitor has no signal. This is expected behavior when the computer is not in sleep, since I set windows to turn the monitor off if the computer is not used for 20 minutes.

powercfg lastwake reports the Power Button as the source o_o oh and thanks for your tips MajereD88

The expected behavior for most systems in S3 is that the LEDs should periodically flash. The operating system writes all processes to RAM, then puts the CPU in a low-power mode. It's almost like hibernate, except that the system state is written to RAM instead of the hard drive. The result is that if you lose power while in S3, it would be like if somebody pulled the plug while your system was running.

Glad to try, at least. Not sure what the deal is about the power button, but I had two other thoughts. Your network card driver may have some WOL functionality that works separately from the power setting. Try viewing your network card in Device Manager, and checking in the "Advanced" tab. Disable any Wake-On-Lan or similar functionality.

A second thought is that Windows Media Player's sharing functionality may be keeping your computer awake. Disable this by going into the advanced power options, then the "Multimedia" feature" and set "allow computer to sleep" when plugged in.

Hibernate works better than this... you'd have to reboot sooner or later, but bleh.

Motherboard doesn't support Hibernate :) and I don't leave my computer on overnight unless I'm downloading something. I just use sleep when I go out for lunch or something.

right. you can only sleep to s1 or s3. hibernate is separate from sleep and wouldn't be listed there.
