Snes9x.com and Wii Opera
(and yes I know you need to change the browser identification to IE for this site)
the question is, how do I change the browser identification setting for Wii Opera?

Thank you sir, will give that a go shortly on my linux machine.MajereDB8 wrote:Set up Squid or some other proxy server on another system.
Nifty.MajereDB8 wrote:You can send a fake browser agent from the proxy.
Don't worry, snes9x.com is the only site I use on a daily basis that needs the IE change.MajereDB8 wrote:Keep in mind that would be a bad idea(tm) for any sites that require https.
EDIT: I've got the squid proxy running, but now to change the headers (and make the wii and the proxy) see Snes9x.com.. would you happen to know the user-agent string for IE 5.5, 6, or perhaps 7, and any settings I'd have to change, enable, or disable?
Double EDIT: found a site called http://user-agent-string.info/ and tried to send IE7 there but not only did it run slow as shit but it crashed on me D:<
Triple EDIT: Got IE to work long enough to goto the above mentioned site and get the headers, as well as fixed a few things that I missed before in the config file to allow it to work, and now Squid is running pretty slick with the Wii

also, for future refrence, the string is Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 5.1; .NET CLR 1.1.4322; .NET CLR 2.0.50727)

Quadruple EDIT: Got another question.. how would I go about configuring this proxy to be able to allow anyone online to use it (eg: I take my Wii somewhere else or use a buddy's Wii to access snes9x.com and use my proxy) BUT only allow sites that use IIS?

Bump for another question:
Would this work on the Nintendo DS version of Opera? as well as the PSP web browser (assuming it's also Opera, I forgot if it is or not)
also for my question asked before, how would I go about configuring this proxy to be able to allow anyone online to use it (eg: I take my Wii somewhere else or use a buddy's Wii to access snes9x.com and use my proxy) BUT only allow sites that use IIS?

the ds browser sucks, and so does any homebrew one. once the novelty wears off, you realize that all you have is a battery sucking, slow as butt browser that requires your network to have basic WEP or nothing at all. and don't forget that you need a RAM expansion for the ds, anyway.
and this much stuff just to see one site on your wii is kind of stupid. the wii browser is also much slower than it should be, and the res sucks. i only use it to watch the occasional youtube video, and that's when the wii is already on. i never turn on the wii just to browse the internet. one time, i used a wii store link to watch a streaming video of some vc title.

With a nice router, you can configure multiple ESSIDs, each with their own security. That way, your other WPA-capable devices don't have to drop down to WEP. That assumes that nobody can crack WEP and also use ARP poisoning to log your WPA traffic, if that's even possible.sweener2001 wrote:requires your network to have basic WEP or nothing at all

i think i have a decent one.
it's a linksys WRT150N. while intriguing, i honestly don't care to bother seeing if it's doable.
the ONLY thing i would want to do is get weekly puzzles for professor layton. and i can just be in nearly any bookstore or coffee shop to grab those.

PSP is not Opera.adventure_of_link wrote: Would this work on the Nintendo DS version of Opera? as well as the PSP web browser (assuming it's also Opera, I forgot if it is or not)
Does SNES9x explicitly block Opera, or what?
Sadly, I actually want the DS Browser, just because of the RAM pack.sweener2001 wrote:and don't forget that you need a RAM expansion for the ds, anyway.

Gil: to expand on Franpa's post, it's because Snes9x.com uses IIS and for whatever reason Opera doesn't play nice with IIS hosted websites. Spoofing the user-agent allows Opera to identify as IE (assuming you're using an IE string, which is what I input into my proxy) and thus Opera will play nice.
EDIT: Turns out I can actually use the Squid proxy to even see my avatar, let alone my site on the Wii.. nifty.

It's the compression module that they're using with whatever ancient version of IIS that still requires a third party module for page compression. It sees the Opera user agent, then sends out compressed content without flagging it properly, so Opera displays garbage. I have never had this problem testing my own IIS server with Opera.adventure_of_link wrote:Gil: to expand on Franpa's post, it's because Snes9x.com uses IIS and for whatever reason Opera doesn't play nice with IIS hosted websites. I've never used the DS browser, but if it supports http proxies, I don't see why it wouldn't work.adventure_of_link wrote:Would this work on the Nintendo DS version of Opera? as well as the PSP web browser (assuming it's also Opera, I forgot if it is or not)
This strikes me as a bad idea(tm) unless you can tunnel the connection through a secure medium like SSH.also for my question asked before, how would I go about configuring this proxy to be able to allow anyone online to use it (eg: I take my Wii somewhere else or use a buddy's Wii to access snes9x.com and use my proxy)
One not terribly elegant solution but reasonably safe solution would be to put your server's SSH and Squid port outside the firewall, but set your Linux firewall to block all access to http unless whitelisted. This would allow you to add "safe" IPs to your proxy, but block all other access to the system.
To eliminate stupid bot scans, you may want to put ssh and http on non-standard ports. Security through obscurity isn't necessarily the best idea, but it eliminates unnecessary log traffic.
A better idea would be to only trigger the filter for sites that you know won't work. As kode54 points out, it's not necessarily a problem with IIS.BUT only allow sites that use IIS?

Don't have a flash card.sweener2001 wrote:if you have a flash card, i'd really recommend an EZ 3-in-1 expansion.Gil_Hamilton wrote: Sadly, I actually want the DS Browser, just because of the RAM pack.
And as far as I know, the RAM pack's only useful for the browser card. I just NEED MY ADD-ONS!
...
Except the Guitar Hero grip. Not a music game fan.
Which just makes the whole thing EVEN DUMBER.
