How to open downloaded save states.

Post by SharkofSomerton »

Hey everyone. I'm playing around and getting the hang of zsnes but I was wondering how you open other save states you have downloaded? For example I have downloaded saves for FFIII that allow you to start from any point in the game. The problem is everytime I fire them up I'm left with just a black box. Do they have to be in the same folder as the original game? Is there something else I'm doing wrong?

The problem is save states are generally tied to whatever version of the emulator they were made with. Any time the emulation itself in a program is changed, save states break.

Not much you can do other than track down the version of ZSNES the save states were made with.

You don't load them directly like you do for the ROMs.

1) Rename the savestate.

For example, if your ROM's filename is SMW.smc, then the savestate's filename should be renamed to SMW.zst.

2) Load the ROM first... Really. You can't load savestates otherwise.

3) Load the savestate via F4.

The savestate should be placed in a defined Save directory.

Sorry for the double post, but do they have to be the same kind of file? For example the game is a .smc while the saves are .zst

Same kind of file? No. All zsnes save states are .zsts or .zs1 through 9.

Think about that for a second - by definition, the save states are NOT the same kind of file as rom images.
Why yes, my shift key *IS* broken.
