Midi Synth Mappable Voices

Post by Ragnark »

Here's a fun request. How hard would it be to make the eight sound channels of Zsnes mappable to to any windows compatible synth bank? I'm aware that many games actually use the SNES synth to create sound effects but I think it would be great to have the option to assign different synth voices to each channel. That way one could even record the songs as midis using various instruments (or matching instruments if you have already determined their respective counterparts). Anyway, some games already use an older synth back that was compatible with sound cards like the AWE 32, an example would be Super Street Fighter 2. If sound channels could be mapped to existing synth banks, then it would dramatically improve the BGM of pretty much all the games on the SNES. You might even take it a step further and see if it would be possible to separate the sound effects from the actual BGM. Obviously the PCM wave files (I assume SNES used waves recorded at 11 kHz.) shouldn't be mapped as they would likely either not sound like anything or would produce midi jargon.

If such a thing is possible, please allow us to select from all existing devices that may be installed on our machines. That way we could even map these sounds out to an installed synthesizer.

Just a thought.

Assume less, and read more on what is what next time before asking.
You'll waste less time and actually learn something.

The SPC is not a "glorified MIDI player".

See this thread to see why your logic is faulty: http://board.zsnes.com/phpBB2/viewtopic ... hlight=spc

anyway if you wish to learn anything, i'd recommend:
  • learning abot .mod music format
  • learning how spc700 works
  • learing how akin .spc to .mod, and how different on sample generation (and more stuff)
  • learning how converting .mod to .mid streams, and you'll finaly get it why... *spoilers*

Besides the SNES outputs at 32kHz anyway, right?
<Nach> so why don't the two of you get your own room and leave us alone with this stupidity of yours?
NSRT here.

Yes, I already knew that 32kHz was the standard but some games had samples recorded at a lower sampling rate.

Anyway, it sounds like the short answer that everyone has offered thus far is: No, it's not possible to do what you're asking in real time. If that's the case, fine -- I just didn't know if anyone had posed the question yet. Please don't patronize me for not knowing EVERYTHING there is to know about the .spc and .mod formats. I thought this was the part of the message boards where one could offer suggestions or pose more in depth questions. Instead all I get is people who seem to lie in wait and pounce upon anyone who may not be as knowledgeable as those who have made Zsnes their life's passion.

A simple reply such as: Yes, this is how it is done (with a link); or, No, this has already been suggested and is not possible, would suffice. Anyway, if you can't provide a friendly answer, then please remove this thread, otherwise I'll keep it here until I get an answer that is satisfactory to all parties that might view it.

Thank you.
