Filling up a Hard Drive
I have a question for you guys, HDs these days start at like 500GB, what do you guys do with it all?
Just have most of it free?
Fill it up with illegal content?
Fill it up with self created content?
Fill it up with other?
Are Hard Drive manufactures that offer such large drives to home consumers knowingly supporting piracy?
When someone buys a new computer, with a giant HD, are they thinking that they'll fit it up with illegal data?

Mmmh, let's see...
- text = 1 GB
- graphics = 3 GB
- audio (game music files, OSTs etc.) = 5 GB
- programs (program installations) = 8 GB
- Windows installation, swapfile, hibernation file = 9 GB
- games (emulators, game installations) = 12 GB
- software (ROMs, ISOs, installation files, packed tools) = 60 GB
- video (movies, videos, video editing files) = 122 GB
About half of my HDD space is still free.

I think I'm using 600GB. if the drive ends with GBs means it's on a striped disk, GBm means it's on the mirrored drives.

First, what can it be filled with? It's almost always media: video, audio, images. Bloated software and games will consist mostly of these internally. Also, the only illegal content is that which is illegal to possess, no matter how it was obtained. Movies, music, and images are in general are not illegal, otherwise video rental and music stores would have been shut down long ago for selling it. Me? I always immediately fill my drives with an assortment of files of all sizes. It's really fast since I just set the EOF and don't have to write any data. You never know when you'll need a file of just a certain size. I even keep an emergency DVD-R of files of all sizes, in case my drive crashes.
Code: Select all
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sdb3 261G 187G 75G 72% /
/dev/sda2 1.4T 249G 1.1T 19% /mnt/otherdisk
EDIT: Oh yeah and a bit of porno.

50% my own audio and video productions
40% open-source stuff (Linux distros,free software,free games,etc.)
10% free pr0n videos (there's LOADS of free pr0n now), OC remixes, emulated music, etc.
Sometimes,I don't even need a hard drive (just use a live Linux CD on a diskless machine and stream radio,TV,play online games,etc....
If you don't play first-person shooters, flying sims,MMORPGs and real-time strategy games, you can have great fun with open source stuff (i.e. Battle of Wesnoth,TORCS,Secret Maryo,Frozen Bubble,etc.).
For games and movies,I use my consoles / DVD player.

It's not paranoia if they're in his oatmeal cookies
