I'm sure I don't care about backwards compatibility; I have a chipped PS2 that does everything I need it to. I'm also sure I don't give a fuck about linux. The only reason I see to put linux on the damn thing is to run emulators which are already running on my Xbox 1, my Wii, and my PSP.
I'd want a PS3 for games and *maybe* bluray movies, if they weren't so stupid expensive. And as has been stated, there are only a few games I'd want to buy on the PS3. Demon's Souls, MGS4, Infamous, Afrika, Folklore, and The Last Guardian. Maybe LBP doesn't really thrill me, dunno quite why. Cautiously optimistic about White Knight thingy, and Heavy Rain looks cool. I think it's enough to warrant a purchase, eventually. Maybe when I have some money to burn (hah.)

Let's not forget they removed SACD support too!
That's right up there with Linux on the "things 99% of people don't give a flying buttfuck about" list.
Especially SF4. 6-button fighter on diamond-layout pads? Barbarism.
Though a 360 and a decent 3rd-party pad is cheaper than a PS3.

I got used to it with SF2 on the SNES. Only thing i ever have problems with sometimes is a left-facing dragon punch motion with the left shoulder button.Gil_Hamilton wrote:6-button fighter on diamond-layout pads? Barbarism.
I really need to get a new PS adapter for the tankstick, though.
Why yes, my shift key *IS* broken.

An arcade stick is highly recommended for SF4. A gamepad is okay, but having all the buttons available in one area is convenient. I'll have to get one myself when I get the money.
It's cheaper if you get the Arcade SKU. But who wants that one? I know MS will drop the Pro SKU and then lower the price for the Elite SKU.Gil_Hamilton wrote:Though a 360 and a decent 3rd-party pad is cheaper than a PS3.![]()
I have a few SACD's but I don't have any SACD player, I don't know anyone who has a SACD player, and I don't see why I would need one when I only have stereo speakers.Gil_Hamilton wrote:Let's not forget they removed SACD support too!

wow, you guys seriously think that homebrew peeps won't get around this? I mean, it's not exactly like nintendo makes the wii to run linux, and yet it does.I.S.T. wrote:OMG THEY ACTUALLY DID AWAY WITH THAT?! ROFFLESPlaystation Games & Media News wrote:Removal of Install Other OS feature
The new PS3 system will focus on delivering games and other entertainment content, and users will not be able to install other Operating Systems to the new PS3 system.
actually it is neither, it isn't officially called the PS3 Slim.I.S.T. wrote:Not the PSThree. the PS3 Slim. I expect the PS3 to come in a few more years.adventure_of_link wrote: Gee wow, who didn't see this one coming.
On another note, the PSThree came out sooner than I expected though (given PSOne and Two came out ~5-6 years after their larger version came out)...maybe the slumping economy and the $599 USD price tag (for PS3) made them push it out sooner?
if you look carefully the original launch of the system back in 2006 was officially called "Playstation 3" with the spiderman font
now this new system is officially branded just "PS3" in a font more akin to the PS2, PSX, and PSP font except slightly more rounded like the PSOne font rather than the harsh square edges.
so this is the first "PS3", while the fat system is the "Playstation 3"

Why would you buy an SACD when you can't play it?alyxx wrote: I have a few SACD's but I don't have any SACD player, I don't know anyone who has a SACD player, and I don't see why I would need one when I only have stereo speakers.
And the primary advantages are increased fidelity due to the much higher bitrate and the fact that they're mastered properly instead of compressed and clipped to hell for the sake of sounding louder.
Most audiophiles listen to them in stereo anyways(doesn't hurt that a lot of the surround upmixes are awful).
In short: SACD sounds better, even if you only have one speaker.
So does DVD-Audio, and by my understanding, DVDA is the superior format.
But no one gives a damn about either one.
Recent study showed people actually prefer the sound of 128-kbit MP3s to lossless CD rips now.
...
In short: The RIAA was right. Piracy IS ruining the music.
yeah most audiophiles that have SACDs etc listen exclusively in stereo or 2.1
SACD and DVD-A is becoming slightly obsolete with Blu-Ray audio now
for example
Trondheim Solistene: Divertimenti -- LPCM (uncompressed) 24-bit/192kHz
Mozart / Grieg: Werke für Zwei Klaviere: Vol. -- DTS-HD Master Audio(lossless compression) 24-bit/192kHz
Akira -- Dolby TrueHD (lossless compression) 24-bit/192kHz
to list a few.
loss of SACD support is lame, but with blu-ray audio.... well you get the idea, it's just that the selection is pretty small right now but other than that the quality is superb.

if you're going to be that pedantic, i'm going to call you out for being wrong.Panzer88 wrote:[if you look carefully the original launch of the system back in 2006 was officially called "Playstation 3" with the spiderman font

the system was originally branded "PLAYSTATION 3." that was changed with this announcement to be "PlayStation 3." (and yes, as far as branding/marketing is concerned, that is a significant change.)
sony has been using the abbreviation "PS3" since launch, which is evidenced on the packages for PS3 software. (proof)

and yes they have been using the term PS3 since the begining but in most of their ads etc. it was always playstation 3 while now they are really going to be pushing the PS3 logo in ads.
I wasn't trying to be uber pedantic, just clearing up that while we all call it the PS3 Slim for simplicity sake, that isn't what they are calling it, but if you look at it, it's clear they are trying to push forward the "PS3" branding.
I also found out another interesting fact about the slim, mostly it's lost features, but it has also gained a feature too.
You can now bitstream your audio to be decoded by your A/V Reciever instead of having the PS3 decode it. This wasn't possible on the old PS3s.

well you would be more sure than I, but it was a feature I was holding out on to not buy a PS3 for a blu-ray player because I wanted a PS3 that could bitstream to my A/V Reciever. Everything I read said that all previous PS3s couldn't, and even in the article about the PS3 slim it said that it was a NEW feature, so that's what I am going by. And yeah hard drive swapping is still supported, there is a video about it on ign.comsweener2001 wrote:are you sure?
i have a bitstream option on my 80 GB. (now a 320 GB, i bet that feature's out, too)
