Need help on Yume Meikyuu Kigurumi Daibouken (SFC)

I think the game is also known as Dream Maze Kigurumi Daibouken for the Super Famicom. Anyway, I'm stuck on the first tower, a sort of clay/stone characters asks me for a pass but I don't seem to be able to find it... Does anyone knows how to open the presents too ? I'm playing the original Japanese version of the game, I know there's an English patch available - I may have to look for it if I can't figure out that part of the game
