Super Mario RPG - Textbox flickering

Post by Socob »

Hello everyone,

As you can tell from the title, I'm having a minor problem with Super Mario RPG: Some textboxes, almost exclusively, but also very commonly in towns, cause the area around themselves and the edges of the screen to flicker, which also seems to lead to some slowdown. Now, I know you're going to tell me to use v1.42, however I already am using that version and I even randomly tried v1.29, but it's the same on those two versions and on the newest release. I apologize if this is a known bug; if not, is there a way to fix this? I'll upload screenshots/configurations files/save files/whatnot if necessary.
Also, on an unrelated note, is there an option to control rewind speed? And where did the option to set the rewind key go in v1.51? It was magically configured to Button 7 of my controller, but I've no idea if/how I set it myself.

This is a known bug on Zsnes and the authors have been aware of it for quite some time. But until Zsnes 2.0 is released, (which, is supposed to be "soon"), I recommend using SnesGT 0.230 beta 6 in the mean time; it's the second most accurate SNES emulator out there. The first one, is Bsnes, but unless you have at least a Core 2 Duo E8400, it will be slow. This problem is compounded by the fact that this game uses the SA-1 chip. SnesGT is not CPU intensive and will always achieve full speed with Super Mario RPG.

Super Mario RPG runs at about ~120fps on a stock E8400, compared to about ~190fps for non-SA1 games. This forum is for ZSNES though. Doesn't sound like the game is unplayable, at least.

I don't know what's wrong with my setup, since I get constant skipping/stuttering on my E8400 CPU. Maybe I shouldn't sync both audio and video. This is why I stick with SnesGT.

Seems a lot of people have trouble with video+audio sync. Good idea though, use whatever works best :)

First of all, thanks for the replies.
I didn't even know about SnesGT, but so far it seems to be working perfectly. Why exactly is it the second-most "accurate" emulator? Accurate in terms of speed/video/audio? Or is it the way it's programmed? Should I even care?

Accurate as in how close the end result matches a real SNES. You shouldn't really care too much unless you like being pedantic or want to confirm if something is likely to behave a certain way on hardware and you don't have access to the hardware to perform the test.

You can use a special ZSNES build made a while ago.

They are nice, almost like vicodin or oxycodone. As a matter of fact, I can give you some if you want me to. The best part is that I can give them away for free.

Hm, that works, too. I don't think I'll use it, though, because it doesn't let me specify where it puts the save file - my folder is messy enough already - but it's nice to have an alternative.

Edit zsnes.cfg manually to set your save path. Older versions didn't have a GUI entry for paths.
whicker: franpa is grammatically correct, and he still gets ripped on?
sweener2001: Grammatically correct this one time? sure. every other time? no. does that give him a right? not really.

Oh, I didn't know you could do that. Thanks!
