Solid State Drives (SSDs)
I've been meaning to get an SSD for a while now and it seems like it's a good time to do that soon. What are specs I should look for in SSDs? Also, what are some good SSD brands?
Re: Solid State Drives (SSDs)
A lot of them will try to trick you with high sequential read specs, but random read ops per second are what you want to really compare, since that'll be closest to real world situations. Intel are generally good, and I've had good experience with their SSDs. Other brands I've heard are good but I have no experience with other brands.
Maybe these people were born without that part of their brain that lets you try different things to see if they work better. --Retsupurae

Personal observations:
Crucial/Micron C300: solid performance, occasional timeouts causing a 1-minute stall in Windows before it recovers (these are rare, though). This is connected to a 6G port on an Intel DH67GD.
Intel 330: solid, consistent performance.
SanDisk U100: noticeably more sluggish than the Intel or Corsair drives, but still far faster than a mechanical drive.
Samsung 840: limited experience (all I've done with one is clone a system drive to it and make sure it works); but I haven't heard any complaints from the user, reviews are solid and the 250GB versions keep going on sale for $150.

Why yes, my shift key *IS* broken.

Personal observation:
Samsung 830: Solid performance, but has a tendency to cause my desktop machine to deadlock completely within 30 minutes of waking from S3 sleep state, so be careful if you're buying for a laptop.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll keep a lookout on Intel and Samsung SSDs.

Has any of you any experience with OCZ SSDs? I'm not gonna buy the octane but if I win the lottery I may do it.

Metal Gear: Solid State sounds like one of those lame dumbed-down NES versions. No one wants to consider it because it's non-canon.grinvader wrote:>no metal gear solid state joke

The Crucial M500 looks quite promising. They even have a 1TB version, if you have money to kill.
