Newcomer to ZSNES needing help with Zelda:ALTTP
I just started playing A Link to the Past recently for that nostalgic feel and I'm having a slight problem. I've been able to modify my keyboard layout to work nicely, however, I don't know how to sprint. I know the command is to press and hold "B" while facing in the direction you want to run. My problem is that when I press and hold the command Link doesn't respond. Can anyone provide me with a solution? I realize the easiest answer is to procure a gamepad but I am bias towards the keyboard for its versatility. Thank you in advance for your help

You didn't mention this, but do you have the pegasus boots yet?

No, I haven't retrieved them yet. I've actually just got the first sword and shield. But I always thought you could run even at the beginning of the game.
Re: Newcomer to ZSNES needing help with Zelda:ALTTP
you can't run until you have the pegasus boots, at which time RUN will be listed under the A-button actions on the subscreen.
Why yes, my shift key *IS* broken.

Game manual. Read it. This applies to every game before... say, 1998.

Game manuals is why toddlers could beat The Legend of Zelda when it came out while adults today attempting the same feat sprain every neuron and collapse into a bewildered seizure 30 seconds in.
Game manuals and lack of other things to do I guess.

I'd really recommend getting a gamepad in order to have a more authentic experience. I usually use a wired Xbox 360 controller(main controller, easy to find on Amazon) and a Saturn pad(used) with one of those mayflash adapters for fighters/shmups. I've never been able to enjoy console games with a keyboard, but good luck man. Also yeah, you need the Pegasus boots(talk to the old man after beating the 1st dungeon) before you can run; hold A to sprint.
LTTP is still my favorite Zelda game by far.

Re: Newcomer to ZSNES needing help with Zelda:ALTTP
ok well i'm going to piggy-back on your thread a bit i'm also new to zsnes and needing help with running on zelda, but my problem is that my steelseries controller seems to be stuck on turbo when i hold down the run button, so it is not holding down long enough for link to take off. i have cleared turbo from the config screen and tried pressing the turbo button that is present on the computer, but to no effect. any suggestions?
Re: Newcomer to ZSNES needing help with Zelda:ALTTP
try disabling any utilities or profiling software you installed along with the controller; they can complicate matters.

Also make sure you're mapping the controller through the input option and not the... button cfg? option. One menu in from the left, not all the way to the right.
One is for mapping your controller to the emulated SNES controls. The other is for programming macros.

ESPECIALLY more detailed ones. Even Nintendo is guilty of slimming them down; check out the manual for new super mario bros u sometime.Bent wrote:On a side note, I miss game manuals.
<Nach> so why don't the two of you get your own room and leave us alone with this stupidity of yours?

Check out the manual for Link to the Past or Super Metroid, for that matter.adventure_of_link wrote:ESPECIALLY more detailed ones. Even Nintendo is guilty of slimming them down; check out the manual for new super mario bros u sometime.Bent wrote:On a side note, I miss game manuals.
I was SO disappointed with SNES manuals when I realized they weren't gonna have full bestiaries and power-up lists in them.

Re: Newcomer to ZSNES needing help with Zelda:ALTTP
Most new Nintendo games just give you the controls, then they usually have a manual that can be read on the console, but it isn't the same. Reading the entire manual used to be the very first thing I did after opening a brand new game.adventure_of_link wrote: ESPECIALLY more detailed ones. At least it seems I am not alone in this.

reading instructions before you start to play spoils half the fun

Lies! The smell of a fresh new manual is almost as good as actually playing. And a damn sight better than fighting hte NES contacts.Johan_H wrote:reading instructions before you start to play spoils half the fun

Oh come on, surely you of all people aren't the kind of person not to see the fun in finding out for yourself. :pgrinvader wrote:As if playing blindly not knowing what the fuck you're doing is fun.Johan_H wrote:reading instructions before you start to play spoils half the fun
Personally I always used to read just a little bit to get me excited, but never the whole thing until I got a good ways into the game. I'd definitely avoid those parts of some RPG manuals where they'd fully spoil all the characters that would join your party.

I'm reasonably sure grinvader used to dump his games and reverse-engineer the ROM images so he knew everything before he started.blackmyst wrote:Oh come on, surely you of all people aren't the kind of person not to see the fun in finding out for yourself. :pgrinvader wrote:As if playing blindly not knowing what the fuck you're doing is fun.Johan_H wrote:reading instructions before you start to play spoils half the fun

Re: Newcomer to ZSNES needing help with Zelda:ALTTP
No joke; finding myself initially baffled to have everything slowly dawn on me just by trying stuff is one of the most enjoyable things in a game for me.grinvader wrote:As if playing blindly not knowing what the fuck you're doing is fun.Johan_H wrote:reading instructions before you start to play spoils half the fun
And I find reading a manual about something I haven't even touched yet isn't nearly as fun or useful as when I have some experience with it, some reference for what it is it's actually referring to, whether it be IKEA furniture, kitchen appliances or a video game.
I also usually avoid trailers for movies I'm already curious about, and don't read the backsides of fiction books until I'm done with them.

In all honesty, I find that varies a LOT with the game.Johan_H wrote:No joke; finding myself initially baffled to have everything slowly dawn on me just by trying stuff is one of the most enjoyable things in a game for me.grinvader wrote:As if playing blindly not knowing what the fuck you're doing is fun.Johan_H wrote:reading instructions before you start to play spoils half the fun
Sometimes it's just minor nuances, but other times major functionality is heavily obscured.
Like Metroid's missiles(bad example, we all know the orphan bastardchild select is used) or Blaster Master's special weapons(down+A is only ever going to be stumbled on by accident).
And Granas help the poor souls trying to figure out the VCS adventure games like ET, Raiders of the Lost Ark, or, well, Adventure.

Yeah, some games are much better designed than others.
