ZSNES' CPU Usage is always at 95%+ for me...Can I stop that?

Post by jj_frap »

First, my specs:

AMD Athlon XP 2500+ (Barton core)

512 MB PC-2100 DDR-RAM (upgrading to PC-2700 chip I just bought in a few day and giving this RAM to my brother because I want my CPU and my RAM at the same clock rate and because it's part of his and his GFs Christmas present from me. (The rest is the grunt work of upgrading their computer. I'm taking care of the software, my step-dad and I are taking care of the hardware together most likely.))

GeForce 4 Ti4200 /w 64 MB RAM. Overclocked to Hell because I could. :D

SoundBlaster Audigy 2 ZS

Windows XP Pro

I still had this issue back when I had an XP 1600+, a GeForce 2 MX (What a POS. And I paid twice as much for it as I did for my GeForce 4. Still, it pwned my Voodoo 2 when I bought it in 2001.), and an SB Live Value (I got 5 good years out ot that bitch.)

Does this problem only occur in the GUI, or also when playing a game?

If it only happens in the GUI, it's a known issue, and may not be fixed any time soon due to the arcane coding from years ago when only speed mattered.

Both...And it's occurred in every Windows version for as long as I can remember.

I'm currently using 1.4 official RC (Not the leaked WIP).

The CPU usage in the GUI is always 100%, or close to it. In the game it should be remarkably slower, unless you have a really slow system or use advanced filters.

The 100% CPU usage in the menu's is bugging me too. My laptop makes an awful lot of noise when the CPU usage is at 100%. I sure hope this issue get's fixed in the near future; it's the only thing in ZSNES I'm not happy about. Other than that: best emulator ever. :D

Can't you go into that notepad configuration file for zsnes and lower the CPU priority level?
Thats what i did, to increase the CPU priority though, cuz my com is slow.

It's not a CPU priority level, it's a percentage of execution...

I was pretty sure this was fixed in the GUI as well as in games but I will take another look to be sure.

Yeah, he's been absent for a long time.
whicker: franpa is grammatically correct, and he still gets ripped on?
sweener2001: Grammatically correct this one time? sure. every other time? no. does that give him a right? not really.

Yay! :D Finally the 100% CPU usage bug is fixed! Now I'm perfectly happy with ZSNES and I can finally enjoy the GUI without my laptop CPU fan blowing like hell! Thank you very much pagefault! :) Wheee!

With the current 02/02 WIP, the state selection screen (F3) still has the problem of unlimited CPU usage...
Tested in Windows.

Edit: This applies to the F1 menu also.

That would be because you're still in game.

That does not offer an excuse for them to use all available CPU power. As I said, those two menus are basking in unlimited usage of the processor—always near 100%.

Could have bought PC3200 RAM for the same price and then set the FSB to 166. You can run RAM unclocked like this, or even run the FSB at 200 to get 3200+ speeds. I know, I made the same mistake.
