Snes sound processor concerns

Post by Cloud Strife »

I know that similar posts have been made in the past and I do not want to make the same mistakes like some people have made by making two of the same threads and I apologize in advance. I've been experimenting with various emulators by comparing how the sound is emulated and what
features each one has. Keep in mind that my intention is not to insult your emulator, Zsnes, which is by far the best emulator overall. Games with high pitched noises, such as cursors in games like Star Ocean, Final Fantasy games and the like use repeated sound samples. Comparing Snes9xW to Zsnes (I know it's unfair), Snes9xw handles these repeating samples better than Zsnes does. This also affects games like Earthbound and TMNT IV when you time travel (the warping sound). Sorry to talk you ears off, but I was wondering why Zsnes plays the samples so inaccurately
compared to other Snes emulators. Again, I apologize.

Usually it has to do with timing, which is difficult to perferct, or something called sound rape, which sqauresoft games are famous for. Sound rape is the game sending erroneous data to the sound chip creating sounds which are not possible in normal circumstances.

If it's so hard to do, why do other emulators have normal timing on the SPC700? It doesn't make sense. Do they just have hacks. If so, can't Zsnes have them, too?

Some emulators have better timing, some have hacks. Zsnes strives very hard to be hack free, so they won't be putting a hack in.

SPC sodomy. :D

Does anyone know if SnesGT and SNEeSe use hacks? They seem to get Mario's fireball right (and all other games that use that effect).

But anyway...something about this thread seems fishy... :o

SNESGT has hacks, SNEeSe doesn't.
