I've got two problems here. One that is a bug, the other just kills my ongoing desire of experiencing nostalgia for my favorite racing game of all time.
My bug, or glitch, is when running ZSNES 1.40 in Windows XP in windowed mode, all I get is a black box. No matter what I do, I can't seem to get anything to show until I hit Alt+Enter to make it fullscreen (thank god that works). Also, when switching programs from, then back to ZSNES (which I have to do if I say, forget to close a chat client and I get IM'd) then the screen still gets all glitchy. Doesn't take much to fix that, but it's still odd to see, and if I have no ROMs loaded, makes it inconvenient trying to deal with the menus at first. I thought this problem was solved from reading the bug fixes, could this be a problem from not making a clean install? As I'm not sure if I did, though I think I did...
As for the killer to my nostalgic happiness, a previous version of ZSNES (which I got rid of, so I don't recall which version, probably 1.36) allowed my favorite game of all time to run the menus. Though this game uses the DSP-4 chip and I know I may never get to play the in-game portion of it, I still feel a degree of happiness being able to play through the menus. The game is T o p _ G e a r _ 3 0 0 0.
Like I said, I used to be able to get through the menus. Up until I tried to actually start a game, which then the screen would remain black and the sound would slow drastically. But now, in 1.40 all I get is the black screen. No sound, no menus.
If there won't be a fix for the cause of the missing menus, then I guess I could go through the previous releases until I find the one that let me do that, but I wonder why 1.4 would be missing that ability?
Thank you. Cya
[EDIT] The name of the game got removed and replaced with something about asparagus. So I just tried to do a quick fix. How annoying. [/EDIT]

That's because Top Gear 3000 isn't emulated in ZSnes. If you want, I'd try using Snes9X, but it's glitchy, and induces seizures. =\
<Nach> so why don't the two of you get your own room and leave us alone with this stupidity of yours?

IIRC, it was a bloody hack that caused it to work, which was eventually removed.Megaman X Gold wrote:If there won't be a fix for the cause of the missing menus, then I guess I could go through the previous releases until I find the one that let me do that, but I wonder why 1.4 would be missing that ability?

Top Gear 3000 being the only game I know that uses DSP-4... That one bitch of a chip to figure out.
EDIT: Such an awesome filter, I might add.

While in fullscreen mode, go to the video options and choose '512*448 DR WIN' mode. No. Black box. But at least this time it tried to tell me what was wrong. I got a Windows beep and a window in the taskbar that said DDRAW Error (but I couldn't see a corresponding window with more details).grinvader wrote:While in fullscreen mode, go to the video options and choose '512*448 DR WIN' mode. I assume I never put DirectX 9 on here, but even if I havn't, why does ZSNES work in Full Screen but not windowed mode? I might have a DX as old as 6 on here, I'm not sure. I'll check later, but I gotta go to bed.
In any case, as much as I wish it did fix it, it didn't. Waaa.
btw, thanks Khan Art-er...I mean, Noxious. Glad to be here. ^.^ And I'd rather a hack to see the menu than not at all. Why get rid of something that makes something work? Seems counter-productive to me.

BTW, ZSNES won't run with anything less than DirectX 8. If you have XP SP1, you have at least DirectX 8. If you have XP SP2, you have DirectX 9.0c.

There has been many reports of people having DX9.0c with problems in the DX8 instructions - thus making zsnes not work.
Try reinstalling DX9.0c.

I noticed in Agozer's ZSNES Changelog that the stereo sound setting saving/loading is fixed. Yay!
I just hope that the following bug hasn't been (or at least won't be) overlooked for 1.41 or for the Bug Tracker.
Sound Filter Selection Bug in DOS Port:
Gaussian/Cubic Spline/(No Filter) - The setting cannot be changed from the default; whether trying to enable Cubic Spline or disable sound interpolation all together, these attempts are to no avail. Gaussian is the only available choice; it's that or no sound at all.
As I have mentioned before, there was a fix applied in the ZSNES September 01 2003 WIP that solved the issue, but for some reason it stopped working in a later WIP and hasn't been functional since. Despite the claim in the changelog for 1.40, it is currently faulty.

In the ZSNES .cfg file:
As long as I'm discussing this at length, I would also like to see a GUI option, "Don't Save Current Config to CFG Files", either as a permanent status that must be toggled manually or "Don't Save CFG Files On Close THIS Time". This would allow one to mess with the settings (such as colors) during a session without worrying about restoring their previous setup by hand. I suppose the best way to phrase the GUI option would be something like "Don't Save CFG On Exit".
Enabling this prevents the auto-saving of the config files when ZSNES closes, as it should. However, it also doesn't allow manual config saving in the GUI ('SAVE CFG'), and this effect seems to serve no purpose. I declare it as a bug. If someone really wanted to restrict all saving of the config files, they could simply make those files read-only.; Set this to 1 if you do not want ZSNES to save the configuration files.
DontSave = 0

I thought it would be beneficial to call attention to this bug report from NiteFox, which was posted here. It applies to the current release, v1.40, and I have confirmed the issue.

Basically, pressing 's' to toggle either will inevitably toggle both, requiring usage of the mouse to fix it, and rendering the whole concept of keyboard shortcuts obsolete.
I'm not entirely sure if this was present in the WIP versions. I guess I picked the right day to do a deltree zsneswip, tsk.
'X' would be a suitable hotkey for either, I reckon.

* Another DOS GUI shortcut key bug:
The shortcut for Eagle Engine video interpolation ('a') is nonfunctional.
By the way, why is the Eagle Engine option only available in this one mode: 640x480x8b?
* And another one:
The "Wide Screen" shortcut key ('i') is broken, too. This option is only there for 640x400 8-bit and 16-bit, but it seems to do the same thing as "Full Screen" does in other modes, which much more closely resembles a wide-screen than a full-screen on my monitor.
* And something else:
Also, for some reason I can't enable 2xSAI Engine, Super 2xSAI, or Super Eagle (these are only in 640x480x16b) at all, with either keyboard or mouse. Any thoughts on this?

as for 2xSAI, Super 2xSAI and Super Eagle not working on 640x480x16, can you even check the box? Or does it not check no matter whether you click it or try to shortcut?
EDIT:
Also, can you try hitting "U" for Widescreen, and see if that works? It seems that Widescreen and Fullscreen share the same code...
And as for Eagle only being in 640x480x8, i think that it requires at least double size (640x480), and 8-bit color (Super Eagle for 16-bit). Don't hold me to that

ipher's WIP Site
Alright, Widescreen/Fullscreen will use "C" (both was set to "U") for the shortcut in 1.41, so thats one problem down.
Edit: Eagle Engine and Interpolation's shortcuts are linked, so changed the Eagle Engine to show I for the shortcut
Edit 2: My tester could enable the differant engines in 640x480, with both keyboard and mouse.

Well, I can't enable them with the mouse or keyboard; no check appears at all. Could it be because I don't have MMX support for this PC? Can someone else see if they encounter the same problem with MMX support disabled?ipher also wrote:My tester could enable the differant engines in 640x480, with both keyboard and mouse.
Oh, and thanks for the fixes.

P.S. Where's my credit for submitting the "DontSave = 1 Bug" on the Bug Tracker?

*EDIT: Yeah, MMX seems to be necessary. I tried disabling it in the Win32 port on another PC and those filters were inaccessible in the same way. I think all these nuances of the various video modes should be explicitly documented; I don't think they are right now, but I don't know.

Won't happen by 1.41, but maybe for 1.42. I would like to have some other people try out the Full Screen option and see if its widescreen for them or not.AspiringSquire wrote: Oh, and thanks for the fixes.By the way, I think that each instance of "Full Screen" would be better labeled as "Wide Screen." You'll have to talk to the ZSNES Document Team (or whatever they're called) about that.AspiringSquire wrote: *EDIT: Yeah, MMX seems to be necessary. Bugs new to ZSNES in 1.41:
* Super Mario All-Stars (U), Super Mario World (U) - Some sound effects don't sound right; they are worse than they were in v1.40. Just listen to that awful jumping sound effect! Other sounds are off, too; I heard a definite difference when starting a level in SMB3.
DOS Only:
* Shortcut key for "Full Screen"/"Wide Screen" is incorrectly shown as "S" instead of "C".
