System requiments in DOS

Post by thomasheiser »

Hi,

i have:

233 MHz Pentium II
64 MB SD-Ram
4 or 8 MB Grafikcard ATI
DOS 6.22

In the Emulation i have at "Super Mario Kart" 20-30 fps. This is not enough to play the game.
But what must i have to run games at best performence.

i know in the FAQ it is 500 mhz, but i think in DOS mode i need not so much. i have overclocked my cpu to 266 MHz then i have 30-40 fps. So i think 500 is more than i need.

would certainly help if you stated if you are using any video filters, what video resolution you have, etc. Also, assuming you are not using pure DOS, but a console from win9x, you could try zsnesw

I could run all the games pretty flawlessly with a similar configuration to that of yours; I just had a Pentium 200Mhz, 32 MB RAM and a 1MB video card (ATi RAGE something for those who are interested).

Drop the sound quality to 22050Hz and if you're going to use image filters, use Interpolation only.
whicker: franpa is grammatically correct, and he still gets ripped on?
sweener2001: Grammatically correct this one time? sure. every other time? no. does that give him a right? not really.

320x240@16 Bit

when i use 8 bit it runs perfect, but the colors are bad.

interpolation makes the emulation slower. but with only 22050Hz i get 30-40 fps.

have you more perfomence tips?

Disable Stereo. It's quite weird that you get so low framerates.

btw, I always ran ZSNES DOS from Windows, but I don't think that helps much.

the DOS port is faster, and i remember the Windows version chugging on my Pentium 233 pretty badly. Basically, other than the tips here (turn off stereo, no filters, lower sound quality), the only thing you can do is make sure that background applications in Windows are closed.

Run it in pure DOS mode, do not allow Windows to start.

Try running at 640x480 DR mode. Running one of the VESA2 modes will result in some speed gain too most likely.

Scaling modes(S modes) are slower. 640x480 mode although higher than what your using seems to be faster on many cards anyway.

None of those things exist.

The fastest video mode in DOS that supports the full range of SNES colors is 320x240x16B VESA 2.

The sound could be disabled, too.

I use "320x240x16B VESA 2". No Filters!
20050Hz Sound. Stereo disabled. Force 8 Bit. Interpolation Graussian enable (without this the Sound is teribble)

I run zsnes in a full DOS 6.22. There are no Windows on my System.

At Super Mario Kart i have ~40 fps, at Super Soccer ~55.
Who can me tell the most performece cost game. So that i can test how fast it is.

Any more good tune up tipps?

Sound disable is much faster, but i must have sound!

I'm guessing you mean "performance costly"

That would be Star Ocean or Doom, I would think. My k6-2 500 could only run Doom at 6 or 7 fps.

Yeah, those two + Star Fox and maybe Yoshi's Island.

If you have a Creative card, Force 8 Bit will probably only slow it down.
Which version of ZSNES are you using?

I'd say one of the most demanding SNES games for ZSNES is Kirby's Dream Land 3.

You mean 2nd to newest.

Jumping back a few version would be faster, but with your PC, you shouldn't have to...
Do you have MMX support enabled?
