Sure, it's possible. We had this discussion already. What's almost impossible is preventing people from cheating. Sadly this is too easy to achieve, even without image processor / hexeditor. A couple of PAR codes is often enough.
Quick example (I did this in roughly 30 seconds):

Since i did that with 3 PAR codes (3 score bytes to set), the save state is also cheated, but now if I erase the codes and resume play, my score is maxed out 'without cheats'.
Since there is no way to prevent this, might as well not start it...
