ZSNES keyboard delay

Post by Duncan Hines »

I've been playing Chronotrigger lately, and all of a sudder there's a sort of "delay" that happens with the keyboard response. For instance, it's like the keyboard buttons almost get "stuck" down sometimes, and when i release the forward arrow, the character will keep going forward.

The reason I call it a delay is because I tested it by putting a specific pattern of movements in with the arrow keys (i.e., when I noticed it was sticking, I hit left then down then right then left, then let go of all the keys). I found that when it caught up, it would follow that pattern i put in, but it was of a longer duration than what I had input.

I'm using ZSNES version 1.42 on Windows XP Pro.

Hopefully this is somewhat clear - I wasn't really sure how to describe what it's doing :) I can try to clarify if it doesn't make sense.

Any ideas on what could be wrong or what I could do to fix it?

Thanks!

Does this happen in any other games, SNES or otherwise?

Oh man, totally forgot about this...sorry...

It onlly happens in ZSNES, and in ZSNES, in just about every ROM i've played.

Another observation is that this started when I upgraded to the latest version of ZSNES....i guess i could downgrade to the old version i was using, but I'd like to stick with this version if i could.

Any ideas?

Try the old version of ZSNES again and see if it still happens.

You don't happen to run WhatPulse or some form of keylogger by any chance, do you?

I used to get this annoying keyboard delay too, and for no reason whatsoever. I fixed it by formating my harddrive :).

Ok, I'll try the old version again. I don't use a keylogger.

And if formatting the HD fixes it, then that adds another reason to the pile for reformatting first thing after i'm done with school for the year....this thing is falling apart!

Thanks for the help - I'll get back with results from the downgrade.

OK, updating fixed the problem...I went back to 1.36 adn it was fine. I guess I can deal with an older version.

Thanks for all the help!

Erase your config files after you've got a recent version. You'll have to configure everything from scratch (takes a whole 5 minutes at worst), and it may fix your problem.

Ok...this is weird...

When i installed the newest version the first time (when the slowdown started happening) i had backed up the roms that i have and their saves, and installed the new version to an empty folder. Result: Slowdown

I had then installed a WIP version. Slowdown

I installed the old version over the WIP version. No slowdown.

Then I installed the new version (1.42 i think) in a new folder. No slowdown.

I don't know why it would suddenly work, unless something I did trying to fix an unrelated problem on my computer also fixed this problem. But I'm not complaining if it works...

Thanks for all y'all's help!!

Having the 'high priority mode' checked in the options would IMO explain all of your problems.

The same problem was bugging me for weeks. Until I looked through my settings and realised :D
