Weird crashes - bug in zsnes or my computer?

Post by kungmidas »

EDIT: Sorry, should have put this in the bug reporting thread from the start. My bad. Remove this thread if you want!

I'm playing the win32 port of zsnes 1.42, and sometimes, this happens:

Suddenly both the video and the sound hangs. The sound makes the typical "stuttering" repeating the last chunk in the sound buffer (or something). Nothing happens for perhaps 10 seconds. No respons from ZSNES whatsoever, not from the GUI nor the game.

Then the game resumes like if nothing happened, for perhaps 5 seconds.

And then it hangs again for like 10 seconds, but this time the video doesn't resume, just the audio. It appears that the game continues with both controls and audio, and I think I can enter the GUI, but the video is still hanged. If I (in a desperate action) try to ALT+TAB to something else and then back to ZSNES, the screen is just black.

I don't know, perhaps somethings wrong with my computer? I had 1.3.. something and it worked perfect like 6 months ago, but I recently got 1.42 and a lot has happened in my computer since last time.

This has happened several times, perhaps once every other hour of playing. I'm running 640x480 (D/S) and triple buffering.

Oh, I see now that I'm using HQ2X, that's a new thing. I'll try 2xSAI or something instead and see if the crashes occur again.

I have updated BIOS, updated drivers, updated windows, and all that...

If this is something with my computer, I'd appreciate any help!

Wow you play for 4 hours nonstop?I wish I could do that, I'm too hyperactive for such dedication.
Try scanning your system for spyware and/or anything using up CPU.

Why do you think I've played four hours non-stop? =)

I estimated basically how often it crashes, and I guess if I play one hour everytime, the crash occurs about every forth time. That is of course a really rough estimation! (And the freezing doesn't seem to be related to how long I have been playing.)

My system is clean, no spyware, no anti-virus stuff running in the bg taking CPU, only a basic set of system services are running.

I've never had this, and I often play games for much longer than 4 hours in a single stint. Tried updating to the latest WIP and deleting the config files?

Sounds like something is hitting your resources pretty hard. Whats running in the backround? Maybe do a scan for virus / malware?

I have had the "rubber band effect" before, but then again I was ripping / compressing video.

Edit: I have never been able to recover video after it happens. If I havent saved in a while, I will hit the savestate key and exit. After a reload I'm fine.
