Breath Of Fire 2
d4s is back at it again, this time with Breath of Fire 2. He is not only coordinating a full retranslation, but so much more. Have a look yourself:

It is simply amazing.

That's great, but the reason I (and many people, I imagine) play that game is purely for nostalgia. BoF2 wouldn't be BoF2 without all the funny mistranslated lines. =p
I'll still get it though. Looks pretty good.

Actually I'm just adding "flare" using the japanese script to get some idea of what supposed to be going on. I haven't played the game and haven't gotten very far in the script, been working on something very dear to me at the moment.
... Ever take a look at the Earthbound ROM? I SWEAR THE PROGRAMMERS WERE ON CRACK WHEN THEY DID IT! JUST LOOK AT IT!
Wow, some pretty sweet work there
For a VERY short time me and Gideon were thinking of retranslating BoF2, but then we both got too busy. Glad to see someone tackling it, and a remake of it is like
For fun, here are some dumb screens from the game, yay!

http://tomato.fobby.net/old/junk/bof2_2.png - Me is.
http://tomato.fobby.net/old/junk/bof2_3.png - Makes no sense unless you know Japanese

This guy spent all this time doing such nice hacking work and new eye candy, yet he didn't put in a VWF!? That makes no sense to me. The script, grammar, and text readability is the main point of retranslating this game. I do applaud what he has done, but from a fellow translation hacker to another, I do find the lack of VWF at the expense of graphic whore eye candy(It's still damn cool though) to be a flaw in his work. The text should be number one before other unnecessary additions or extras.
Anybody find an e-mail address for that guy? I don't see one.

You've already discussed this with him, if you want to discuss VWF more, here you go:

He did add one, it was just recently though and he hasn't posted screens of it to the blog. He's also added multiple fonts.Nightcrawler wrote:This guy spent all this time doing such nice hacking work and new eye candy, yet he didn't put in a VWF!? That makes no sense to me. Its not what you think, and I'd rather not discuss it in public :/Agozer wrote:Hahahaha. I think I already know. Just try me.grinvader wrote:HolyLobStar wrote:been working on something very dear to me at the moment.

Haha.. you're right! I did have a slight feeling of deja vu. Thanks for pointing that out.Nach wrote:You've already discussed this with him, if you want to discuss VWF more, here you go:

After I wrote my response today, I got a private message. Suffice to say, I no longer have a need to carry on this discussion.

Should be interesting to see the finished patch in the future.
D4s has gotten to play around with and learn alot of SNES features. I'm interested to see some of the HDMA intro effects and Hi-Res mode useage. I'm actually somewhat inspired to actually do some sort of cool intro to my next patch release demonstrating my own SNES coding skills. I wonder how many hours he spent on all the 'extra' stuff in there.

Then why mention it in the first place? You know people are gonna ask.LobStar wrote:Its not what you think, and I'd rather not discuss it in public :/Agozer wrote:Hahahaha. I think I already know. Just try me.grinvader wrote:HolyLobStar wrote:been working on something very dear to me at the moment.

It would be pretty nice to see more fan remakes like this. At least from a translation perspective, all the games I'm currently working on take so damn long just to do the basic translation on it, I'm not about to invest another large amount of time remaking part of the game. They take long enough as it is. The other reason you don't see too many hacks like this is there are limited people with the SNES coding skills necessary to do so!
If you really get into the pure romhacking side of the scene though, there are quite a few impressive hacks out there already. Alot of them are Mario World and Zelda 3 hacks though due to the advanced editors available for them. They are good nontheless. And there are plenty others aside from those.
