the game works fine in all other respects, but when i go to the shop, all i see is the text balloon from the shopowner on a black screen.

Is it a faulty dump of the game? I mean, I'm guessing by the sounds of it you've checked the entire checksum and whatnot. Have a look at getting another dump of the image and see if it makes any difference.

Try posting the ROM info with NSRT.
Try out CCleaner and other free software at Piriform
